I agree with Teamspeed.

I didn't buy a 1,100 dollar camera. I will end up getting around 700 for my 60D plus or minus and I bought my 7D for 1,050 and it has a canon grip which I will sell for 100.

Thus making it a $250 upgrade. Add in the cost of switching memory types makes it an expense that slipped my mind.

Understood, and it seems that my point has been lost that making comments like "stop complaining about having to spend X more on items when you already spent Y on something else" is generally unhelpful, is not logical, and for some just rude.

I always would get into it with others when I would talk about having to put premium into my SS. They stated "you paid over $30K for it, and you are complaining about having to spend $4 per gallon to fill up?". These two statements make no sense together, because I could buy a $6K stage 2 turbo Buschur racing Talon TSI AWD and complain about having to put premium in it, and they would have agreed with me and went down a completely different train of thought. Illogical, I say... ;)

Oh well, we both vented, on goes the thread. :) Keep an eye on the various sale boards, you might be able to put together a purchase for 2 8GB cards for less than 1 16GB card, and it is always good to have backup cards.

... .

I don't think so :)

To the OP .. just think about having to purchase the CF card as an added tax, but at least you get something to show for your $40 ;)

Agree with both comments and would add that you need to consider the full package. Body, memory card/s flash and lens.

An expensive camera body and crap lens = crap

This is a great comment, and is more constructive.

I wonder how many people buying the 1DX don't realize that they cannot use their SD cards any more if they are used to having both CF and SD. Some of them may have to now buy multiple CF cards if they are in the situation where they have backups to the backups for both the CF and SD slots from previous 1D series.

It is hard to determine full ownership price on these systems before jumping in. We could probably put together a community checklist that a new owner could fill out to figure out their total budget needed. You could have sections about memory cards (capacity? need backups?), section about lenses (budget EFS lenses vs mid-level vs high end), etc.

If done properly, one would not really be surprised by additional purchases needed when they buy a camera.

FYI, some Walmarts carry Lexar Platinum II 30mb/s 8gb for $25. I bought a few. Works fine on HD recording and raw burst.

It's called research, my good friend. Anybody who purchases expensive items without researching is just asking for trouble.

I use these: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …actFlash_32GB_Memory.html (external link)

Plenty fast and every bit as reliable as the Sandisks as near as I can tell.

One warning though, there's a slower variant that has an issue, this card here: http://www.newegg.com …aspx?Item=N82E16820208389 (external link)

For most purposes it's an acceptable card with one annoying detail, when you try to format the card in the camera body it screws up the partition, for whatever reason it formats it as an 8GB card and wastes the rest of the space. I had to download a specific utility from Transcend to set the partition straight. If I format the card through the PC/card reader it works fine, but the 7D just can't format it natively.

The 400x version has no trouble in this regard.

I was aware of the compact flash but was not aware of their prices. It's not a big deal. I'm willing to throw down 50 bucks on a card, I was just hoping to get a 32gb card instead of the same 16gb. I rarely ever max out my 16gb card however I would easily max out any 8gb card. Seems like a 16gb card now and another one later is the best choice for me. Thanks for the heads up.

I won't be doing a ton of raw bursts... it's nice it's there and if I do any it'll just probably be a 10 shot burst and thats it. I think I'll stick to the 200x cards for now.

I would recommend that also. Buy two 16GBs (one now, one later) instead of one 32GB.

You're absolutely correct about considering the entire package. I'm looking to upgrade to a 5D III (from a 5DC). That means that in addition to an already expensive camera, in order to replace my current setup I also need: new battery grip, an extra battery, new L-plate, a couple of larger/faster CF cards, and possibly an updated CF card reader. It adds up quickly.

I have a few of these and have no problems. But with the upcoming firmware update, it may take a faster card to get the full benefit.

I'm thinking of this card. Would this be fast enough? This card fits the 50 budget, is my 32gb that I wanted, and also seems fast enough to work good on the 7D... I hope. Carries the best $ per GB for the speed.
