Interesting. What made it so especially miserable?
Regarding your shot I think it's composed very very well. The motion of the sky (clouds/stars) above combined with the circular pit below gives the impression that the pit is the center of a powerfully sucking vortex. Which is a cool phenomenon. And you're even saying the place kinda sucks!

Thanks David. I struggled with this, because I had a hard time showing depth. Is this thing the size of a basketball or the size of a football field?
[edited to add] Oh, forgot to answer your question: Wind. This place gets very windy and very cold, very fast. The first time I visited almost 2 years ago, I could not leave the tent. It was blowing fine sand at about 60mph.
This second trip a few days ago... was the same thing, except that at after midnight it died out and left me with great skies and nice temps. Now, let's discuss that road to get here? I drive a beat up little scion, it's never let me down, and I've had it in some really killer places. It came through like a champ! Needless to say, it's a very cool spot, just not one that I will be returning to, and if I didn't get scrubbed the first time, I would't have come back this time - but then, I'm persistent
