New Sigma 35 1.4 paired with the 5D3 seems to be a nice combo!!

f/1.6 ISO 800...funny, I don't even think about noise until 3200 or so. So nice! :D

Nice shot. Does your kid roll his eyes every time you get out the softbox?

Nice shot, Dan. Great job getting nice skin tones in that terrible lighting.

Of course they do. If you can't tell he is sucking on a Jolly Rancher in this photo. That is not a coincidence! ;)

Being a father of two, pictures like these always bring tears to my eyes.

Sad and strong photo here especially, Christmas is coming...

:(

I am not a father, but that photo really makes you wonder about the world we live in. That little girl didn't ask to be born into the situation she finds herself in. It's so saddening. I don't know if I would have been able to take that same shot myself.

I have 2 kids and Im so sad to see this pix! The world is just unfair!!

Please don't inline 7 images just for a single comment. I can see image specific comments, but an entire post is just wasteful. I'm not trying to pick on you specifically, it's a common issue in these threads.

As for the kid posted by ttytian, you have to be careful as pictures can lie. I see this in Bangkok in a few popular areas. There are professional beggars (scammer would be more accurate) that do this for a living. They basically take kids and sit at popular places to get money. They have a new kid every month. I see the same ladies at the same places, with different babies and kids each month.

Granted, it's still very sad for the kid as she deserves better, but it's not always what it seems. Here is Asia we have really poor people with very serious issues, but all in all, most people have some source of a living and you really almost never see anyone panhandling for money despite being far poorer than anyone you have ever seen in the west.

Here is an example of what I mean. This is a popular pedestrian bridge by MBK. This girl is with the same group of ladies I see. The second shot was very touching. You see, she was watching me take her picture and raised her Mickey Mouse toy to imitate me using camera.

At first I gave money to them, but in reality I am paying them to exploit children. It may sound heartless, but you really shouldn't give money to them. The trick is finding who is really in need vs. those that are scammers, exploiting children.

I totally understand how everyone feels here. Indeed, that scene initially came to me with very strong feelings. However as correctly pointed out by Gregg, it was not long after that I realized that the girl was actually a 'tool' used by a larger scam organisation.
1) their pail where pedestrians drop the money is never full, in fact, always empty.
2) there are always 1 or 2 guys standing nearby who doesn't move and maintains eye contact with the girl/s

In fact, the whole of Bangkok (especially the touristy streets) are littered with these groups of beggars, but none as emotion stirring as this little girl lying alongside the pavement, for whom made me stop, think, shoot, and give a small token.

While I would say that this is one of my favorite photos of 2012, it doesn't really bring a smile whenever I look at it.
