I and many others have found the 50 f/1.4 to have inconsistent AF, hard to microadjust. Bokeh isn't so great either. The 5D3 AF does manage it better than other bodies, but you need to perhaps take a little extra care getting focus when using it. Additionally comes the AF steps: LENS NAME: #STEPS CANON LENS EF 50mm 1:1.4 USM: 660 CANON ZOOM LENS EF-S 10-22mm 1:3.5-4.5 USM: 1185 CANON LENS EF 14mm 1:2.8L USM: 1398 CANON ZOOM LENS 16-35mm 1:2.8L USM: 1566 CANON LENS EF 100mm 1:2 USM: 1687 CANON LENS EF 28mm 1:1.8 USM: 1800 CANON ZOOM LENS EF 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5 USM: 1900 CANON LENS EF 200mm 1:2.8L USM: 2098 CANON ZOOM LENS EF 28-135mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS USM: 2276 CANON ZOOM LENS EF 70-200mm 1:2.8L IS USM: 2512 CANON LENS EF 35mm 1:1.4L USM: 2517 CANON LENS EF 24mm 1:1.4L USM: 2521 CANON MACRO LENS EF 100mm 1:2.8 USM: 2535 CANON MACRO LENS EF-S 60mm 1:2.8 USM: 3298 CANON LENS EF 200mm 1:1.8L USM: 3706 CANON LENS EF 85mm 1:1.2L USM: 4212 Would suggest the 40mm f/2.8 STM instead. In addition to the focus issue, I saw that at the f1.4 end, it's real soft. Better at f2.0, great at f2.8. I need the f1.4 aperture, though. I guess that's why you pay for 'L'! Low light is the name! 5D MK III | 550D | Canon 50mm f/1.8 II | Canon 24-105 f/4 IS USM | Canon 70 - 200 f/4 IS USM | 580EX II | 430EX II

This is the first I've heard of AF steps. Can you go into more detail? Although I think I get the gist. Anthony | Flickr

As you surmised, it is the steps within which the AF mechanism can adjust focus. For example, the 85L has almost eight times more steps within which it can adjust focus. Not knocking the lens, I have one, it's just recognizing it's characteristics when using it and knowing the frustration factor it may carry. As I said before, the 5D3 does a better job of handling the lens, but there are physical limits to the possible.
