seems like the ex90 is way too expensive for what you get.

which is exactly why i'm looking upwards at the 270 for roughly the same price.

Agree that it is too expensive, but it can serve as a master, which all the other compact ones cannot. It's a whole lot better than using/wasting a 580ex as a master. The 90ex will make using the 430ex off camera much lighter.

This is the key.

Buying a Canon flash that can act as a master that ISN'T the EX90 will cost much, much more than this little booger.

If you will never need remote flash triggering of Canon speedlights, then go for the 270EXII (or a used 270EX), as it is small, light and can be bounced.

ABR800 - Several flashes, remote triggers, stands, too many and yet not enough lenses

i was not aware the EX90 can be a master and the 270 cannot... and i do see a possible 430ex in my future. i already have plans for an off-cam cord and diffuser so the angle feature is moot in my case.

If a 430EX or EXII is in your purchase plans and you want to use pre-flash triggered optical flash mastery you either need a body that has it built in, like the 7D or a flash capable of acting as master.

Since Canon has discontinued the 580, the only options are the 90EX or the 600-super expensive.

Smart of Canon, from a business standpoint to make sure the 430's couldn't do it - big reason people would step up to the 580, even if they didn't need the extra power.
