Magic Lantern 2.3 is now out and, at first glance, seems very good.

In addition to previous features it includes ML ISO control which allows you to further reduce (or increase) exposure. This is claimed to reduce noise but also gives more latitude with equivalent ISO's below 100 for shooting in sunlight. :-)

I found a quick access button to adjust camera audio, ISO, and White balance (the meter pattern button). It might have been there before, but either way very helpful as it does it while still maintaining live view.

Magic zoom includes the ability to zoom a focus window while recording, etc.

Focus Peak - Was available in previous version. This is very useful, particularly in documentary gathering when you have to see and take the shot with one chance only.

Audio Levels - In the viewing screen as previous.

Movie Logging - A metadata file including lens, exposure and time stamping any parameter changes.

Many other features for both movie mode and stills - it will even allow a 50D to record movies. Great piece of kit.

I did have a bit of a thrill when I installed it as I had to upgrade to the latest Canon 60D firmware 1.1.1 After this I hadn't appreciated that my cards were boot enabled and the Camera wouldn't restart with the card inserted. Reformatting the card with a lapdancer solved the problem allowing me to then install ML 2.3 onto the camera.

I also found another trick :- Once the cards are boot enabled you can copy off the files from the card which you used to get your favorite ML settings onto your other cards and these settings will then be resident when you change cards. The ML file structure is much cleaner now introducing an ML folder onto the root tidying things up a great deal.

It is such a shame those with 7D's can't avail themselves of this raft of excellent features. ;-)a

Can't promise anything about 7D, only that the most skilled developer from the ML team is working on it. I have high hopes, but no promise.

I'm so excited to go home and install this. I just got my new SteadyVid replacement which is working phenomenally.

I got 4 cameras to flash (t1i, t2i, 60D and 5dm2), so the day will be long for me!

Hi Alex, I didn't realise you were on this forum. ML is a great piece of kit transforming the functionality of my 60D. I couldn't now imagine doing video without it. The upgrade is like having a new camera again for almost no money. A big thank you to you and the guys.

BTW, the new web site is a great improvement as well.

Don't do it. At the moment I can use the unavailability of ML for the 5D Mk III as an excuse not to buy one. :-)

I'm also looking for broken or defective cameras - details here: http://www.magiclantern.fm …ews/133-defective-cameras (external link)

Maybe a broken 7D body?

Magic Lantern is the sole reason I kept my T2i after I bought a 7D. What a great, great tool.

Thanks for the update, I'm more than happy to make another donation for it!

I am very excited about this version. magic lantern is truly one of the most revolutionary open source software solutions i have ever used. My job would be hell without it. At work i shoot video wit ha T2i and before magic lantern I found it to be so impractical to use in the field.

Never used Magic Lantern but after hearing about its features and how smooth it is, donated last night and put it on my 5D MK II. And.......I'm loving it. Just messing around in my room, I'm already in love with the screen layout while filming, controlling a ton of features and settings on the fly and really was impressed with the audio. I had a fan on in my room and had did some recording with a Rode VideoMic with the WS6 wind cat before Magic Lantern and after and what a difference it made. I really can't wait to learn MLs features more and put it to work next weekend. I'll also be buying a 60D and love that it'll work with that aswell.

One question I did have, does ML 2.3 run like any ordinary Canon FW where you install it once and your good to go? Or does it need to be on every memory card I'll use with that camera?

It must be on every memory card
