Luckily it was behind glass! Took the kids to a local wildlife rescue. I was bored while the tour guide was talking (we had been there before) so I turned around to get a picture of this big guy who was staring right at me. As I lined up to take the shot I was so engrossed in what I was doing (and trying to avoid these strange smears on the glass) and didn't see him slowly moving towards me. He lunged and hit the glass with his front claws. I yelped and jumped back and noticed everyone (tour guide/people on the tour) looking at me. It was pretty embarrassing! I turned back and looked at the (whatever it is, some kind of lizard?) it was clawing at the glass and gave me one last evil glare before turning it's back on me. Totally missed the shot.
Didn't realize I had this pic until I pulled them off the camera. Must of hit the button when I jumped.

I always keep the off camera eye open and remain aware of my surroundings for just what happened to you. I have a crappy heart and don't need any scares like yours. On the other hand, great capture on your part even if it was just a knee jerk reaction.

I had a monkey poop in his hand and throw it on my face and camera while I was shooting at a zoo once.. And there was at least a million people standing around laughing like crazy.. hahaha
