Last year I was shopping for a super zoom, and ended up with the Tamron 18-270 (the old version). There was a rebate, and I could not find any independent reviews concluding that the Canon (or any other make) was superior, while several gave a slight nod to the Tamron. I have used it a lot in the subsequent months, and have no complaints. The extra length can come in handy, and it gives sharp results when stopped down a bit. For what it is (a walk-around vacation lens) it does the job. In this class, where IQ expectations should be modest, price may be the most important criterion for many people.

Digital EOS 90D Canon: EF 50mm f/1.8 II, EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro, Life-Size Converter EF Tamron: SP 17-50mm f/2.8 DiII, 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 DiII VC HLD, SP 150-600 f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2, SP 70-200 f/2.8 Di VC USD, 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 DiII VC HLD Sigma: 30mm f/1.4 DC Art Rokinon: 8mm f/3.5 AS IF UMC

I had that lens and thought it was a great lens. I don't give a rat's but5 what the reviews say, I got great pictures with mine on my 40D. The only things I didn't like about it was the way the way the lens protruded when zooming (which is common on non-L lenses), and the creep lock on mine was semi-effective. Otherwise I highly recommend it. It was sharp and light, and I think it's a great "do-it-all" lens, especially for outdoor photography and travel.

I sold mine in favor of the 24-105L because I intend to eventually move to a FF body and the EF-S series is incompatible with FF. I missed having the wide end of the lens (18mm), so I just bought the 17-40L.

Here are a couple of examples from mine:

If you click on either, you can see the full resolution.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with it, especially for an all-around, vacation lens. It gets an undeserved bad rap, IMHO.

I had one....sold it cause of the negative reviews, I tried some L ones, and they are not twice as good.
The 18-200 is a very nice lens overall....
I'm shopping a used one

You had one and sold it because of the reviews rather than how it performed? Curious.

From actual use as a walkaround lens a various events, the 18-200mm IS lens has worked well.
