I wasn't able to find the manual online. From the product specs/description it seems like the hotshoe doesn't support direct geotagging, so it must be cabled to the USB port on the camera. Kinda defeats the purpose of a hotshoe unit IMO.

I'd rather have a GPS that mounts to the hotshoe and connects with a cable so that it can LOCK to the camera than something hanging off the usb port.

Oh I agree.

I was speaking from past experience when I used a Gistek geo-tagger where I just kept the device in my pocket or bag, and then I would do a batch process to add the lat/long/alt info into the EXIF.

If I had a 7D, I'd be frustrated that there wasn't full compatibility w/o having to use a cable. I would hate for the cable to get snagged and tweak one of the port, etc.

I just got the GP-E2 for my 7D yesterday. It comes with a short cable to connect it to the camera.

Scroll down a bit on this page to see a picture.

Canon GP-E2 come in with two cables:
The 1.5m long cable for off camera carry as travel GPS log.
The short cable (? 15cm) for 7D user - one plug into the GPS unit, another plug into the Camera; or off camera plug in for 5D3 (similar setup as off camera speedlight).

The setup as Todd / tgara as above:
