I had this happen to me today at the Seafair parade today...some guy was trying to explain how much better his camera was than mine, and kept walking in front of me while I was trying to shoot because I wasn't paying much attention to him. In the 10 minute conversation I had to ask him to move like 5 times, and I don't think he snapped a single image...

Obligatory gear list: 5D II, T2i, Canon 85 1.8, Canon 50 1.8, Canon 100 2.8 Macro, Canon 70-210 3.5-4.5, Sigma 10-20 4.0-5.6 (For Sale/Trade), Sigma 17-70 OS, various converted MF lenses.

So what did he have that is so much better than a 5D2?

He had a Nikon D800E, and apparently used to shoot with a 5DII. I made the mistake of asking how he liked it, at which point he felt the need to justify to me his costly switch from one camp to the other. I didn't mind hearing some of the differences for a minute or two since it was a pretty dead spot in the parade, but when he kept ranting and ranting and trying to show me things on his camera when I was trying to photograph the pirates in the parade playing with kids in the audience he really ticked me off.

I should have pointed to the guy taking cell phone pictures and said, "You know, his camera has probably gotten better pictures than yours has in the last 10 minutes, since he's, you know, using his."

Also, sorry to steal your rant London...what happened in your case?

I think if it were me I think I'd silently just start taking tons of pics of their face while they talk. Hold shutter down, rapid fire, stop and review images, silently make a few weird faces while reviewing them and then go back at it. I'm sure that'd make them feel quite uncomfortable and stop talking.
