I looked in the manual and couldnt find this...

when focusing this yellow square will show up with an exclaimation mark..what is that?

You pretty much can't. If you don't reset the frame counter, you'll at least have a count of the number of photos you've taken from the frame number, but that won't count times when you fired the shutter without a card in the camera.
