Bought the cheap 1.4x kenko extender (Teleplus MC-4 DGX version) and tested on a 100-400L mounted on a 5D Mark III. I wanted to see if AF was good enough and what kind of image quality I could achieve with this combo. I believe the combo is front focusing a little so I will likely have to micro adjust it. Overall for the small expense ($150) I'm happy with the extender. I'm actually very surprised at the AF performance. I expected it to be much worse. Below are some samples for your own judgement if you are considering this option.

view 100% and the detail is there... expecting no iq penalty isn't reality IMO.

Probably not the best example as that was shot @ ISO1600.

I think you might be better off using the bare lens and crop after.

For the money, I'm happy with the results. Cropping can only do so much. Eventually, one runs out of pixels ;)

Well they look reasonable to me. Just need to work on the compositions a little.

Did you have to tape pins?

Yes. Thats with the DG PRO300 which likes to tell tales to the body. Not all converters do, so tests are needed.

This isn't the DG Pro 300. It is the MC-4 which is the 4 element cheaper version.

Which should AF perfectly well without having to tape the pins.
