The little smudge is in fact that big line seen at f22 I think. Hope I can get rid of that and the other dot!

Make sure you buy the SensorKlear version of the LensPen. The one with the smaller tip. Not the larger tip one which is fine for lenses.

And make sure you give the cap a few twists before you use it. Freshens up the tip.

I only use them to clean sensor a few times and replace them often. Afterwards keep them around for other things (eyepiece, lenses, etc).

Try to use the right tools for sensor cleaning or get it professionally done.
Doing it half heartedly could result in an expensive repair bill.

That smudge in the top right of the image , could be lubricant, so a wet clean is recommended.
The other bits are lint from the cloth you used to clean the sensor with

I definitely recommend getting one of the genuine lens pens and using that. The one end uses a felt pad with carbon dust (pretty sure) on it to clean and it's really easy to use. Just rub in a circular motion and hit it with some air from a rocket blower and you'll be good to go. Get a good LED pen light to see exactly where the mark is and keep in mind if it's at the top of the image, it's towards the bottom of the sensor. I.E. it's opposite how it appears.

This is what I got:
http://www.amazon.com …ef=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 (external link)

The thing on the bottom left: It's a "smudge" at f5 and there's that big line there in the same spot at f22.....

Oh and this might sound dumb but can you just use the computer air blower things and hold it a little farther back to blow them off?
I was looking for it "backwards" like you said Ken but i still can't see it on the sensor. I'll get a LED light though.

Thanks everyone.

Yup, thats the Lenspen SensorKlear.

NO! DONT USE 'COMPUTER AIR BLOWER THINGS'. Use a manual bulb type blower, ie: rocket blower. You can buy that on amazon while your at it. Get a large rocket blower.

So am I reading this right that a good percentage (more so than not) of you all clone out dust spots and it's just part of it.

I doubt it. I would guess that most people on PotN have learned how to clean their sensors (it is very easy).

I bought one of those (actually two of them at the same time, thinking they would be great), and they were disastrous. I've done my own sensor cleaning for years with a squirrel hair brush and a canister vacuum (I use the vacuum only to pull dust off of the brush and give the bristles a charge to attract particles on the sensor). This method works perfectly and allows me to get my cameras' sensors completely clean at f/22. While I was traveling, I didn't have the brush or vacuum, so I decided to try a Sensorclear Lens Pen on one of my cameras, following all of the advice I found on this forum (first use a rocket blower, rub the tip of the pen in the cap, and then tap the side of the pen against something hard to get the big particles to fall off, etc.). Well, the pen got the largest spots off but left dozens of little ones all over the sensor; it was the biggest mess I've ever seen, especially in the corners. I tried both of the two pens I purchased, and the situation just kept getting worse. I took the camera in for a professional cleaning, and even they couldn't remove all of the sticky pen particles. I had to sell the camera like that. These pens are terrible! Stay away!

I think you need some sort of illuminated loupe to see the sensor spots, their not that visible without magnification.

BOOM! Best advice ever. They make things SO much easier.

And Abby, cracking butterfly shot.

Just to reiterate this message/point..
DO NOT use "canned air"..reason? it contains solvents that will spray onto your optical surfaces, and are VERY bad for coatings, and can/will easily damage filters/optical surfaces..

Get a bulb blower and you will be fine!

If you know what you're doing, canned-air works great, better than the Rocket. Canon-techs use it to clean sensors, they obviously know what to do and what not to do.

The self cleaning function helps keep the sensor clean longer but not forever. Using a Q-Tip is not a good idea and you can do more damage than good. Sounds like it is time for a wet cleaning with the appropriate tools. Check out this website for more details.

I thinking about order it for cleaning sensor, but read your warning post about lenspen put you through nightmare..

Thank you for an alert...

Nicholas R, can you explain the proper way to use the canned air, if you know?

I took some pics today and I don't seem to have any smudges, but when I look through the camera I see crap there.
