C'mon, Frank, you can figure it out pretty easy, I'm not going to give it any more traffic here. But it's just like the old Pravda as far as propaganda goes.

Oh, OK, I'll give you a hint: www.cleaningsensors.com (external link)

Regards,
Nicholas

I dont understand this point at all...we are NOT actually CLEANING OUR SENSORS!!!!!
That is a figure of speech. We ARE cleaning the OPTICS/optical filters that are installed in front of your sensor.

Glass and silicon are two completely different materials...I think..

And I am pretty sure that long term exposure to methanol would cause those things you mentioned...being in the same room with it is a bit of an exaggeration..
but, that doesnt mean that simply because the analogy you used is a bit of a stretch that it isnt actually true..

Sorry...couldnt stop myself...lol.. done flaming...NOW :)

I had a different experience. I had one blob that was showing on my pictures and ordered the Eclipse kit. It came close to ruining my sensor. After running one of the swabs across the sensor I now had multiple spots, plus two smears that weren't there before. Everybody said it would probably take more than one cleaning so I didn't panic, but after using four swabs without the sensor not improving I decided to take a different route. I got the SensorKlear lenspen and it worked. It took me three cleaning sessions but I finally got the crap off the sensor that the wet system smeared.

I had used the SensorKlear pen years back with my 30D and liked it, but everybody seemed to rave about the Eclipse swab system and I thought I would give it a try. I watched the company's video on YouTube and followed their instructions. But the lesson learned is that if you have a system that works for you, stick with it. The wet system didn't work for me, but the dry system (Lenspen) does.

This is actually quite normal when dealing with spots that are not actually dust, but more chemicals, etc that may somehow get onto the filters..
Most times trying to clean them off simply moves them around and does not remove them...it is a PITA, I know..but as you found out with some perseverance and the RIGHT TOOLS for the job, you will be perfectly fine.
Hopefully though, you get to that point before scratching the filters, or ruining the coatings on them, which would require a trip to Canon for replacement :o

OK, is that why I have a turnip growing out of my elbow? And is it why I can't stop singing the "Banana Boat" song while running through the yard with my underwear on my head? Been using Eclipse and canned-air for over 10 years, ya'know!!! A few months ago I woke up with 5 penises. I told my urologist and he said: "Very interesting, but how do your pants fit?" I said like a glove.

Brent, this has been a fascinating, droll and highly convoluted conversation that has scared the bejesus out of my soul, but I'm off to have my nightly shot of methnol whilst I spray propellant in my eyes.

*Some people just shouldn't even look inside their D-SLR (you know who you are) - just send it in to Canon, let them have it for about a week and everything will be honky-dory, nothing to worry about except the sky that's about to fall .

P.S. - Brent, as long as I have been foruming here, I have steadfastly said that cleaning one's own sensor is definitely NOT for everyone, including people who are deathly afraid of the tools that digital photographers have been using for a very long time. But for the rest of us, we weigh all of the facts and throw in some common sense and proceed to clean our sensors.

And we are doomed regardless, no matter what this thread implies..seeing how people continue to believe in things like "global warming" or "climate shift", and using canned air on highly sensitive optical surfaces. ;)

Really? Your stating unequivocally that these are myths? Sorry, I just lost all interest I had in your explanation...

it was sarcastic ;)

I was/am not taking it off topic, it was merely a joke..and sarcastic.
It cannot be proven, and it cant really be disproven, depending on who you talk to..(not only that, did I ever say that they are definitive myths or some other way to make you think I was someone who would KNOW? no..I merely used it in a sarcastic comment to show emphasis that we as a people will latch onto certain ideals and beliefs simply because they are the answers we WANT to find/know,etc and no matter what scientific or other imperical data is thrown at us, we CONTINUE to argue over really rediculous things like this.. :o )
So for someone to take a statement like that so seriously is rather...interesting..to me..

nevermind..sheesh..cant take a joke..and you are damned if you do and damned if you dont..

on with our happy existance!
:) :) :)

While over-looking the entire first 2/3rds of your reply(you must have been a bit too close to your canned air!lol)

I agree completely, Nicholas!! I never said otherwise..I was simply stating that using a substance like canned air on an optical system is NOT the way to go, especially for anyone who doesnt know how to clean their gear!..that is it.
It is just a bad idea (IMHO) to tell a forum of people to use a product that CAN/will possibly ruin their equipment IF they do not know how to use it properly! (which is quite a lot of people..) I have been one of those people in the past where listening to a couple people in a forum giving advice on how to do something and totally ruining whatever it was that I was working on simply because I did not know what I was doing/how to use the suggested method properly! and it cost me, dearly!

So I try not to give people blanket statements like "canned air is fine to use on your optical surfaces-(when used properly)"..it may be for you/others with experience, but not everyone..whereas other methods are pretty much idiot proof(though I know there is always that 'one guy')

And I couldnt agree more about "those people" needing to just send their equipment into the manufacturer for proper repairs/cleaning/etc

where is the "ton of bricks" emoticon because we are both saying the same thing, but in a different way..LOL! ;)
(or atleast I am trying to..)

Again, really? Climate scientists say it's "proven" fact. Since I don't have the training or background I'll follow the experts. Next thing we'll hear is that evolution is a myth/theory. Give me that canned air for my dirty sensor!

omg. "really?" towards me?
You just helped my point.thanks.
climate scientists are NOT all in agreement about this!! and if you think they are, you REALLY have shown that you dont have the training or background to know.(neither do I, which is why I said there isnt enough proof!)..I dont think there is a single "theory" in existance that ALL scientists, even in one specific field, ALL agree on...SO, YES..IT DEPENDS ON WHO YOU TALK/listen TO!
All I can say at this point is do NOT listen to what you hear in the news, go talk to real scientists, or professors at your local universities...it may help, it may not..it may coincide with your current beliefs..or make your head hurt and leave you wondering about anything and everything.. ;)

Technically, isnt evolution described as "the theory of evolution"? even by scientists? (I may be wrong, but I know that that is what I was told growing up..not sure about right this very second..)
is the egg good for you? or bad for you? *at this exact moment in time* ;)

I firmly believe in evolution, too..this is rediculous.

Use whatever you want to on your equipment! :)
