Well the upgrade should be pretty soon right, say within 3 months?

17-40 is obsolete on crop, considering the gear you already have.

You are correct. I had gift certificates for B&H from my birthday and fathers day that I used for the lens. Looking to get the FF (5D2) in Oct unless I see a deal I can't pass up before than.

I bought the 17-40 last August. I can count on one hand the number of times it's been off my camera. Have fun, and get a CPL for even more fun!

How much distortion is in this lens? Obviously its there at 17, but what about in the 20-24 range? I've been considering this one myself when I upgrade my camera to FF

I just got mine about a week ago and will be using it on my 40D (don't have a FF... yet). I haven't had the time to really get into it yet, but so far I really like it!

3.6% @ 17mm (Barrel)
2.5% @ 20mm (Barrel)
.2% @ 28mm (Barrel)
.5% @ 40mm (Pincushion)

These numbers come from a test with the 5D MKII

I just bought this lens and found myself either shooting at 17mm or 40mm. Rarely did I want to zoom in between. Maybe it was because I was in New York CIty and I wanted to get as much of the buildings as possible. As far as the distortion goes, it seems like it is angle dependent. In the first shot the people are getting distorted and the on the Kodak sign you can see some bend but nothing to dramatic that cant be fixed in photoshop.

There's a good amount of barrel distortion at 17mm on full frame. That said, it's hard to find a lens that doesn't have barrel distortion at such a wide angle.

I find that on FF, if I focus closer than my main subject suggests, that the apparent sharpness of the much maligned corners is improved greatly. Don't worry about the background for printing- worry about the foreground detail. It's a wonderful lens when you figure it out.
