Hey guys,

I have a 7D and I want to set the LCD to turn off whenever I half press the shutter (so the LCD screen isn't blinding me). Is this possible? I went through the menu options and couldn't find anything (unless I missed it, which I wouldn't be surprised I did).

I'm assuming you keep it on to see your settings... If you hit the info button you can cycle it to be off normally and only on during playback of images. Viewfinder will display most settings so there's no real reason to keep the display on at all times (saving battery as well).

You should have it turned off all the time and have it come on only if you want to view images after capture. The typical review time is two seconds, I believe, but can be adjusted to your preference. Leaving the LCD on continuously will run the battery down rather quickly. You may be accustomed to shooting a Rebel where the default is to have the LCD display on continuously. On the 7D, there s a small LCD on top of the body that provides you with necessary shooting information.

Thanks guys for the tips. Yeah, I agree with just leaving the screen off completely to save battery, and the viewfinder/screen at the top side of the camera has all the settings displayed. Battery is never an issue for me as I never shoot for more than a few hours max. I do have a battery grip with 2 Canon batteries also. I just like the LCD on because it's bigger and easier to see the settings.

I guess there is no way to set it to turn off when half-pressing the shutter. Hmmm, I may have to consider the pros/cons of having the LCD on/off. Would be good to have it off, especially at night time so it doesn't blind me. I could even just turn the brightness down all the way.

There has to be a way. . .my (rear) LCD only comes on when I press [Q]/Menu/or the playback buttons. As soon as I press the shutter button to focus, it goes off!

Reading the thread, I'm assuming he means he wants the LCD's INFO display on when he's NOT half-pressing, but on the rest of the time.

Is it really that much easier? Memorize where the top-view LCD display's night light button is and just give it a press. Even LESS drain on the battery. Besides which, just take a peek through the viewfinder.

That 100% FOV must be good for SOMETHING. And last time I shot through a 7D, it had all kinds of yummy info looking through it.

I thought that most models had a sensor that detects when you pull the camera up to your eye and shuts off the LCD?
So if I understand right, do you use the viewfinder at all? how do you compose?(LiveView?)

My T1i did. The 7D does not.

Only the Rebel series does as far as I know. The higher-end cameras have the small display on top of the body. And, all models have shooting and exposure information in the viewfinder.

And, besides you wouldn't want it to be know that you are a chimper ... would you? :p

If you like to use the rear LCD for its "Quick Control" display and options, you can assign the "Set" button to open to that screen - if that helps :D

Yeah, I use the viewfinder all the time to compose. Never did shoot through liveview.

Right..forgot the rebels are the only models with the sensor.. :o
Just had to look at my 60D and 5D2 to be sure I wasn't losing it.lol
Guess I have just gotten used to having the LCD off at all times(no preview time either) unless I hit the play or quick control buttons..
