2nd Same Day Edit--Josh plus Amanda

My brother and I completed our second ever Same Day Edit today (actually our second ever wedding video period).

Any feedback and CC welcome. We worked to improve stabilization and focus after receiving feedback on our first video. I think we improved in these two areas, but need to work on the 'storytelling' aspect for our next video. Let me know your thoughts.

With weddings, the story is already there, within the process of the wedding. Trying to capture the back story while at the wedding would be a cool concept, either visually or by the bride/groom telling the back story and trying to find inserts to go along with the story points.

Really try and hit some sort of focus and stay with it. In the cuts, the focus starts to come in and then you cut. The stability of your shots looks good, I haven't seen how you started, but looks steady enough for me.

Why the SDE? Marketing?

The reason for the SDE is both demand and marketing, but mostly marketing.

We will continue to work on maintaining focus throughout the shots.

Good clip, like the montage and the slides and shots with glidecam are very good.
A lot of the "fixed" shots seem jaggy to me, like handheld dslr footage. Guess those shots were made on a monopod? I would suggest to use a good video tripod for that. You can easily match the smooth movements from the slider and glidecam with very slow moving fixed shots.

Yes, most of the fixed shots were done on a monopod. We have one very good Manfrotto video mono pod and one not so good cheaper monopod, so some of the shaky shots might be from the not-so-good monopod.

Using a video tripod will definitely help create a very smooth look, but I'm concerned we won't have enough time to set up and move a tripod throughout the day. So much of the day is run and gun without much time for preparation.

I really appreciate the feedback. I'm curious what you think of the editing sequence. I thought some of the shots were complied is a somewhat random manor (ie-shots of the ceremony, clip of smiling toddler, back to shot of bride/groom leaving through bubble tunnel). Is this something other people notice?

A few comments..

I would like to see the music and video sync. In the beginning when the notes of the piano playing there is a half second delay in the cut where it goes to a different clip. I think that would unify the emotion in the music and the footage if they sync better.

The Color grading seems inconsistent. I know you had to work with a lot of different lighting conditions during the day but some parts seemed flat while other parts were a bit warmer and inviting. what picture style did you use on the cameras? How did you setup the white balance for each shot?

Exposure seems a little too low on the faces/subjects, These cameras do not have an amazing dynamic range so I would expose a little more on the face/subject than trying to balance the background and foreground exposure. you might be able to push the exposure in post to make the faces pop more.

It does a decent job telling a story but I think that is something you can improve on. How do you build a story when you go into a wedding? Do you think what you want to see/achieve before you show up or do you gather as much footage as possible and develop a story in post?

All in all I think you did a great job. Cant wait to see more.

I didn't even think about the syncing the accent note of the song with the switching between clips. We'll play around with this next time. Good catch.

The picture profiles are all set the same (neutral, sharpness all the way down, contrast all the way down, saturation down 2 notches, color tone at 0). If there is a better setting to use, I'd love to hear about it.

White balance is usually set to auto, but sometimes we have time to set up a specific temperature. I know this is a big reason why our shots don't always look consistent, but because we are switching light environments so often, and sometimes moving between lighting environments multiple times in one clip, it's really hard to know what white balance setting to use. Right now we do some color correction in post, but it's only applied to shots we feel need some extra pop. Color grading and white balance corrections are something we struggle with. Hopefully we'll be able to save up for magic bullet, but right now we are stuck with the color correction available in FCP.

We typically put the story together in post based on the footage we are able to capture throughout the day. Again, this is our second ever wedding video, so I'm sure this will be something we improve on, but right now we just take the shots that are given to us and do the best we can to frame a story around them.

I would suggest you set the WB Kelven manually. you can control the look you want. Its hard to fix any WB issues in post. Auto WB does a decent job in most conditions outdoors but indoors it doesnt do very well.

I think you would benefit from a story board. If you put one together before you shoot I think you will create a nice story and you will miss less of the shots you may want to get. I think a storyboard will make your day of work easier and your post even easier.

The only thing I can add is thatA lot of what GotAudi said, you would have time to do if it werent a SDE. Timing of the shots, Color corrections, and such. As for the focus Remember that the lower your f stop, and the more you zoom in the tighter your DOF gets. I personally tell everyone to get closer to the subject and NOT zoom unless you have to. All in all its good I didnt think the shaky shots were that shaky, BUT i am a fan of nice smooth moves in a video. IMHO its what makes the Pro stand apart from the Amateurs. Nice Job.

There are a few scenes that was a little dark maybe could have been brighteened in post a few points. Just a thought, otherwise a good job I'm sure the clients will love it.
