I'm considering buying either a 50mm, 105mm or 180mm macro (preferably sigma for the 180 or 50, and canon for the 100mm for the USM). I want the 50mm for the price and size, the 105mm for the portrait and all around usefullness of the focal length and 180 for serious macro photography.

But with the 1.6x factor of the D30, is the 50 (80mm effective) now a viable portrait lens? and is the 105 (168mm effective) too long?

Thanks in advance

Mike

I use the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro and absolutely love it. I can do both serious macro and portrait work with the same lens. Overall good value for the quality also. Good luck to you.
