I am not happy!

Out today to take some unrepeatable images.

New battery, LP-E6, charged overnight but never got green light. Charge level showed at 66% so considered it should be OK as I was only expecting to take 50-100 images absolute maximum.

First 9 images fine, safely saved to the card. Next batch was a short burst of about 6-10 images, no more. Battery dies before images saved from the buffer to the card.

Having partially recharged the battery it shows image count of 0, which is wrong.

Simple question, is the battery faulty? (I can think of several other words for it!)

Yes, charger or battery is broken. Return it for a replacement.

Maybe it is an old battery that have been on a shelf for a very long time - if a lithium ion battery gets too depeted, it will refuse to take charge to avoid the risk if fire.

1) What camera do you have?
2) Do you have another batterie to test the camera?
3) Have you tried another memory card?

Please first make shure if it's the memory card or the batterie
or the camera itself.

Good luck.

The 1st charge on a "new" battery takes significantly more time to reach full state than an older cycled battery does. Put back on charge and let it charge the battery fully till the green light comes on showing it is fully charged.

Yes, other battery seems fine, as does charging to 100% with green light and correct image count
Not tried a different memory card

A recently acquired SterlinTek battery had some strange behavior after the initial "full" charge, only delivered about 20 shots in my 60D and then appeared to be dead. After the 2nd "full" charge it bahaved normally, even delivered about 400 shots on a recent Alaska trip.

As "joe" says, charge it again then see what happens.

You should do a full charge & discharge cycle on a new battery to correctly calibrate the "level" indicator. (So I've been told, anyway.)

True, but...

"Overnight" should have done it (unless the OP's "overnight" is 3 hours! ;))...

There may be a battery / charger issue. But, I'd still try to charge it again. If it doesn't work the 2nd time, and your charger works correctly with your other battery, return the battery.

Thanks all.

Battery now been on charge for past 30+ hours and still no green light.

As my other battery charges fine, I'm going to assume this one is duff & send it back.

Sorted. Battery returned to Canon. Replacement received within 3-4 days.

Brilliant after sales service from Canon.
