Bathtub racing, the cleanest sport around, returned full force to Camas, Washington this past weekend. The crowds were crazy (as were some of the contestants) but there was only one accident and everyone seemed to survive without a scratch.

And finally, the man in charge, Pat Ray, who returns to Camas every year to help run the races......

Seems like the goal is to dump as much water out early to lighten the load.

IT would seem like a good strategy but...the course is short, 4 pylons in about half a city block. The whole race is down and back to the start so there isn't much time to spare dumping water.

Was this aired on ESPN 8 "The Ocho"?

Nice shots of an interesting and obscure event. Thanks for the laugh this morning.

Thank you Noitca, it is a fun event that has become a tradition (20 years?) for the Camas Days celebration. Small town fun for sure. Camas is a mill town - paper mill. The favorite float in the Camas Day celebration parade is the one that tosses out souvenir rolls of toilet paper...:D New Orleans has nothing on Camas when it comes to celebrating, that's for sure.

As far as 'The Ocho'? Almost!

Fantastic shots, Dave. Well presented and looks like BIG fun! Thanks for posting something we don't see 'round these parts. Our big deal was the All-American Soap Box Derby last week. A bit more tame than bathtubs full of water on wheels!

They should race to a pond / lake and then slap on an outboard motor... not sure how well those tubs would float though. :p

Nice work Dave! :D

Thanks Dave - I think one of the fun aspects of the races is the lack of team preparation. I believe some of the teams get together for the first time the day of the races. Soap Box, while great fun and a challenge, is generally well prepared and under control. I missed the last derby here and it was run on a hill only about a mile from the house.

Thanks Joe - they are vintage iron tubs with heavy metal framework for the wheels. But they do leak water. It would be a blast to see one with an outboard attached though.

Have I now met the original Joe Black?
