I have the RS-Sport and it's been great overall. HOWEVER... the biggest problem to me is the difficulty to get the camera up to my eye when shooting vertical. The screw-on hook attaches to the tripod hole on the bottom of the camera but when you hold the camera while shooting vertical, the hook will be on the right side instead of the bottom. When attached to the carabiner on the Rs-Sport, there's not enough slack to allow you to pull it up to eye-level. You either have to buy another carabiner to extend the connection or never shoot in vertical... :P

Just an FYI, a photographer that I shoot with said that somehow the secure screw lock at the carabiner came on done and his 5D Mark III with his 70-200 dropped straight to conc floor. He had no idea how that came undone.

Probably he forgot to snug it, but it is also a reason why I have my little safety strap...

That will be me as soon as my RRS stuff ships. I'll practically weld the screw into the clamp so I won't worry about that connection...

I just used a dab of blue loctite and moistened the rubber gasket a bit. I've carried it all over the world and it is still firmly attached. If you're really concerned, mark the tightened position with a sharpie so you can see if it is backing out - I doubt you'll ever see it move.

I don't think the FastenR/mount is the weak/danger area - it is the carbiner (see above story). Whether people don't snug the screw tightly, forget to screw it altogether, there is some way it works itself open, etc. - I don't care - I feel MUCH safer with the strap, plus it is one extra layer in case I get the fumbles while installing/removing the strap.

The below alternative " Carry Speed " is another nice choice to consider:

I have no such problem with my RS-Sport 2. It easily comes up to eye level. I had to make some adjustments, but it works great in portrait/vertical orientation. I'm 6' 180lbs average build..if that make a difference.

Whoops... Forgot to mention with a battery grip on m 7D, I would have trouble as the grip further extends the distance when shooting vertical. Without the grip, it's fine. I have the original RS sport... Not sure if the problem is still there with the sport 2

I've done some of these ideas and my biggest grip is that it restricts the camera from swiveling. If the camera does spin its now tangled up

is the strap too tight? I can't imagine how a battery grip can cause that problem...in fact, I would think it shortens the distance from lug to strap. unless you are shooting left handed?

Having carried mine a fair bit, I can only say it hasn't been a problem at all...

Only difference between the original sport and sport 2 is the width of the strap at the shoulder section. It's slimmer on the sport 2. Otherwise it's identical.

These straps are made to fit a wide variety (as much as possible) of individuals. If you happen to fall outside the design perimeters you may have some adjustment issues.

Had an opportunity to give the sport 2 a good workout today with my 60D and 70-200. I couldn't be more happy with it!

I lost my Black Rapid FastenR-3 and came across this Black Color Carry Speed Rapid Mounting Plate with Tripod Mount Ready (external link) while searching for a replacement. Any feedback on how this will work with Black Rapid RS-5?

My concern would be the plastic interface between the camera and the tripod or plate, so there will be more vibration at that point. It looks like it would put the carabiner out far enough to clear camera plates though.
