Part of the answer lies in the different settings and custom functions that have been set within the camera, even with two of the same model.

With the test I suggested to Alexam, it was designed to get him to rely on the flash control menus, and to establish that correct communication had been established. Camera exposure settings are irrelevant for this.

For normal shooting with flash, I would suggest the camera mode be Manual, and the Flash mode set by camera menu be E-TTL for action situations and Manual for controllable ones. Regardless of body used.

Thanks again Clive.

I'm helping a friend out this weekend to shoot a wedding and was thinking about trying off cross lighting on manual and ettl on camera. Is there a way to set the triggers up so I can turn off the manual flashes and still use the on camera in ettl? Also, I believe I can not adjust the power levels remotely also correct?

I'm not sure if this was brought up already, if so, my apologize.

Thanks

I figured it out (I think)... It appears when on camera, the default is ttl., so I will have my manual triggers/flashes set-up on channel 2 in which all flashes will fire and then when I want only the on camera, I will use channel 1... That's the way I checked it in my house...

Let me know how fast it ships to you (or an estimated delivery date?) If I have any problems with the triggers, I dont feel like making an exchange a 2+month ordeal (1month shipping there, 1 month shipping back, plus delays if they decide to try to fix it instead of just shipping me out a new one)

matthew1371 would you mind keeping us updated on when you get your stuff?

Still waiting for shipping confirmation, but I'll update info on delivery & arrival as we go.

FYI, got an email this morning that said these had shipped from the Amazon seller w/ an estimated arrival date of 07-13Nov.

Got the triggers in today. Ordered on Nov 1st and arrived on the 9th, not too bad especially taking into account Sandy slammed the east coast during that timeframe.

That should work.
Another option, which I've found works well, is to have the stand lights in group B since the on camera light is group A by default. Then use the ratio feature to control the relationship between the two groups. I tend to have group B about 1/2 stop hotter. One benefit is that the group B light quenches without blowing out the shot if its in frame.

If you want to get really creative put a second stand light in group C and use FEC to control it. Makes a nice back light or accent.

If you decide to use manual, remember to feather the lights toward the ceiling so they are less bright when a subject is right under them. It also helps to either zoom them way wide and put the wide angle panel down, or zoom them more toward telephoto and aim them across the floor.

This is one time that the stofen bare bulb diffuser can be useful.

In another forum, my findings about what can be done with a Type A camera and a Class 2 (430, 550, 580) flash was being queried. I retested, and amended the compatibility wording accordingly.

Essentially, a great deal more can be done with Class 2 flashes than some think.

I used a 50D in M, 1/200S, f2.8, ISO320. The common flash settings were ETTL, Evaluative, WB Auto, FEC -2/3 to comensate for the black cloth. Three YN-622C were used. All adjustments were made on-camera.

As usual for testing, I took an ambient only shot so that the amount of light contributed by the flashes could be identified. (This "control" technique would have been helpful in some earlier posted images!)

Two 430EX II flashes were set up at approximately 45degrees either side of subject axis. Camera Left: Group A. Camera Right: Group B. A folding Douglas Grey card evaluates lighting.

(1) Ambient only at -2 stops. (2) Ratio 1:1. (3) Ratio 3:1. (4) Ratio 1:3.

The left 430EX II was replaced by a 550EX and a further 4 shots taken.

(5) Ambient only at -2 stops. (6) Ratio 1:1. (7) Ratio 3:1. (8) Ratio 1:3.

You can see that the 550EX is in fact being controlled by the camera's ratio, and its extra output is being properly reduced.

The Other Guide now includes:
Partial control (Class 2)
Set on flash: Flash mode (ETTL, M, Multi); Zoom
Remote control using Flash Control menus: Sync mode (1st, 2nd, HSS); ETTL functions (FEC, FEB and Ratio).
• Canon 580EX, 550EX, 430EX
• Yongnuo YN-560 C.

You can turn off the on-top flash using the "Master Flash enable/disable" in the camera flash control menus. I haven't thought about the other yet!

See page 8 of my "The Other YN-622C User Guide" (link below).

Well done. I'll test, and add it to page 8!:D When you say Manual triggers, which ones do you mean?

That is usually due to poor contact between hot-shoe and hot-foot. Clean the contacts and make sure that each foot is fully seated and locked down.

Thanks! Ive tried like 7 times, but I guess I wasnt pushing it hard enough. on the last attempt I pushed it hard (jamming in almost) and it clicked when it hadnt clicked before....

After that it all worked as expected :) Thank you very much, I'd not have thought that would be it... Thank you 100%

Yongnuo YN-560 C. should be excluded from the list

YN-560, YN-560II and YN-560EX flashes with full manual control.
They are not controlled by the camera's menu
They are, in addition, on the hot shoe, they will always be in sync for the 1st curtain.
With the PC port, you can sync it to 1st/2nd curtain and SuperSync at full power.

Thanks for the correction. It was inserted after users "confirmed" that it was contrtollable to the extent required, but there is always a risk with such claims.

Seems HK post office is super slow. I believe that Mainland China is way faster. I had 3 items from mainland China come to California in 7 days. For HK its 3 weeks or more.
