Tuesday I finally received the last pair of 622's.
Just in time as I had a "Make over" photoshoot to do in the evening.
On the enclosed photo I placed a softbox to the left with my new YN-565EX (A) and behind the model I placed my old Canon 380EX (B) (supposedly not working with ratios as it is too old) to light up the background.
1/60s F4.5 ISO400
Ratios between the 380EX and the YN565EX works just perfectly and makes it easier to balance the light.
This is my first shoot with the 622's with only off-camrea flashes and I didn't believe that my 380EX would work other that in plain TTL and exp.compensation (C).

Now there will be many more shoots with these :D

Thanks for that report. I have a 380EX left over from my film days and the triggers are on my Christmas list. Since the 380EX has no custom function to disable sleep mode, can it be awakened from the trigger on-camera?

I don't know, I haven't seen it enter sleep mode, but I can test and get beack.

On another note, it is not possible to control the 380EX alone, like manual power level settings, unlike the Yongnuo YN-465.
Only flash exposure compensation if set as group C or Ratio when in group A or B

I did surmise that but thanks. Though not critical, is HSS available through the Yongnuos with the 380? I know it's not in the camera menu but there is a switch on the unit and it would be nice to gang it with my other flashes in an umbrella for outdoor use.

I have not seen any user confirmations, and Yongnuo say that the 6D has not yet been tested.

I would be wary of eBay listings that include the 6D, at this stage.

it seems that 6D is currently shipping from Amazon and bigger US online shops..
I hope that soon someone might report if YN-622C is compatible with 6D.

i currently have 450D but my long run plan is to update to 6D...
So i prefer to wait a confirmation that these triggers are compatible with 6D before buying the triggers for my 450D

Also waiting on confirmation. Im eyeing the 6D but I don't want to render my 2 new sets of 622's useless. Will settle for the 5DII if not.

I checked this yesterday evening (I'm in Sweden) and it WORKS!:D

The 380EX does HSS with the YN-622c

You need to set the HSS in the camera menu (1st curtain, 2nd curtain, HSS) it doesn't matter what yo set the switch on the flash to.
Verified that I didn't get any curtainshadows in the pictures up to 1/4000s by testing the same with my YN-565EX and there I got the shadows.

Thanks for your time. The guys here can add one more flash to the semi-compatible list. :) And I can get some useful light off-camera (other than a full dump) from an old but reliable flash.

The 380EX is in Class 3 - camera-set ETTL; manual levels not provided.

Canon 20D + YN-622C + YN465 (does not work on camera)

The 465 works fine
a) directly attached to hotshot of camera, e-ttl and manual. Focus assist light does not light.
b) attached to 622 off camera and fired by another 622 on camera, e-ttl and manual. If set to manual mode, will be forced into e-ttl mode by 622 in remote mode; does not return to manual mode if 622 set to mix mode.
c) on 622 on camera hotshoe: DOES NOT WORK. The test button will fire it; I can remotely trigger the test flash from any other 622.

Tried this on 4 different 622's. Have tried resetting all 622's. The 622's are from 10/2012, according to the sticker inside the battery compartment.

Anyone else with this camera/flash combo?

Without Type A camera flash control menus, there is no way to set the flash mode for the on-camera 622, and it adopts E-TTL mode.

If you set the on-camera 622 to Mix mode (not on remote 622s), you should then be able to set a manual power level on-flash. (It will not "return" to a Manual level because the flash's mode has been reset to E-TTL.)

Again, with a type B camera, you do not have the means of making the necessary settings for the on-top flash. I expect that the on-camera 622 sets a default of "Master Flash" = Disabled. Of course, it could be just as you say - "YN465 (does not work on camera)", and the on-top flash is treated by Canon as a camera-mounted flash!

When you test fire from any 622 on the same channel, the flash on the camera-mounted 622 is not an "on-top" flash, but a slave flash - its 622 is just a receiver at that moment.

What you are reporting is exactly as it should be, except perhaps for which unit you are setting to Mix mode.

Actually I'm extremely surprised, given the my reading of "The Other YN622C User Guide" (very useful BTW - thanks.) As far as I can tell, I'm using a Class 1 flash with type B body, which should work fine.
The section on On-Top Flash didn't list any exclusions by type of class of flash or type of camera.

By the way the following do work On-Top Flash:

Type B with Class 2 flash: 20D + 622 + 550EX
Type B with Class 4 flash: 20D + 622 + YN560-II

Perhaps all Class 1 flashes do not work with all type B bodies, or more likely all Class 1 flashes do not work with the 20D. Or perhaps just one Class 1 flash (the 465) does not work with type B bodies.

Even a dumb flash should fire if attached to the 622 on camera.
Most likely Yongnuo did not test the 20D/465 combination with the 622. I wonder if the other 46x flashes have been tested. Perhaps someone from Yongnuo could answer that.

The 622s cannot make flashes do things that they are not equipped to do. Yongnuo says that the YN465 does not work on-camera. It is almost certainly designed that way to avoid the patent licencing problems that could arise if it did. The on-top flash is in a special category in Canon flash programming - it is not a group A or B or C flash, it is the Master flash.

"Should work fine" is an assumption that, however manufactured, all devices should exhibit all features. That is a nonsense. The official User Guide, and The Other Guide are guides not treatises.

The 622s are designed for communicating between a Canon type A camera (2007+) and a Canon class 1 flash (2007+). Anything else that can be achieved is bonus.

Buy from YongNuo's own company store and you can be sure to get the latest:

yongnuostore is just another retailer, passing itself off as Yongnuo.
