transferring photos from disk to CF card

I enjoy using the slide show feature in my S30
to show photos when I travel to friends and family.

Can I transfer photos from my PC to a formatted CF card
and play them back in my S30 slide show

Will this corrupt my CF card
even though I intend to format the CF card
in the S30

Has anyone tried this

It won't hurt the card,. and as long as you don't format the card in your PC you should not need to worry about the card becoming unreadable in your camera.

For the images to be read by your camera,. you will most likly need to put them in the same folder structure on the card as the camera does,. (ie: a folder called DCM with subfolders in that lik "Canon 105" etc)

The only problem I once encountered was with pictures I edited with Photoshop Elements. After transferring them to my CF-card the camera gave an error on those pics and didn't show the image.

I think that you would also have to rename your photos
to keep them in sequence in the camera's folder.

I've never had a problem with my A20 using the following technique.

The pictures must be in JPEG format.

Copy the pictures you want to show on the camera as a slide show to a new folder on the PC. Rename the copies in the same manner as the camera does - i.e.IMG_xxxx.JPG - MUST be upper case (so I go to DOS mode to do this usually!) - But your camera may not be so fussy. The numbers must be in the sequence you want the camera to show the pictures and I usually start at 0001

You can also re-size the pictures to 640*480 (ish) as this is more than adequate for the TV. They also upload a lot faster. Make sure that they are rotated correctly.

Using the camera - erase all pictures on the card. Then take one new picture you will never want.

Upload the pictures to the same folder as the picture you have just taken is in. It doesn't seem to matter if you upload more than 100 pictures.

Using the camera to delete the gash picture you took earlier.

The camera should scroll through the pictures just fine and also do a slide show. You won't be able to do a multi image preview though but they should zoom okay (well mostly)

When you are done, use the computer or the camera to delete them.

I usually create a folder called slide show as a sub folder of each of my other image folders and use a freeware program call xnview to do a batch re-size.

Hope this helps. I think this ability is great as you can show your pics to anyone who has a TV with a SCART socket. If you are careful you can even continue to take pictures providing you have room left on the card.

Having just bought the A70. I shall be experimenting with ways to re-load videos and I shall be interested to see whether I can reload a movie I have edited on the PC and play it in the camera. In fact if anyone knows what compression method Canon have used for the A70 movies perhaps they could let me know.

BTW I regulary use my card(s) to transport programs/files between PC's and also I keep a copy of the Excel spreadsheets on each one that I use to rename the image files to more meaningful names (Or back to IMG_xxx style). So far I have had no problems. These spreadsheets generate DOS batch files - I am happy to send them to anyone who asks - but I won't support them and they are not documented!

I'm having this problem with my A70 too. I edited it in photoshop and now can't put the pic back on. I get this popup ->
Error:100_0900.jpg is an image not taken with a Canon camera or was edited after being taken. This image cannot be viewed in the camera window.

Anyone able to edit photos and put them back on the camera?
Any Advice?

It's probably already been mentioned here, but Irfanview will also directly open RAW files with a plugin. However, they are presented in 800 x 600 or even a bit smaller. It's great though because you can press T inside Irfanview and get quick thumbnails of all your RAW files without the long RAW > .tiff or .jpg conversion.

I fianlly got my pics to the camera. I dont know how exactly, i used 2-3 programs of saving as, exporting etc 10 times each. Fiannly it worked. Later i'll do it again but to find out exactly which step worked and let ya know. I used the canon software after photoshop. I though if they 'saveas' the file or export it, then it would be in the same format.

Piper: I donwloaded those programs you recomended. The CkRenamer, did you see the other two programs that guy put on? CKFolder and CDHide.

In additon to the correct dcim folder structure, canon have another directory with .cfg files. I suspect when that poster created a single image, this created that folder. You can upload regular pictures with zoombrowser, never played with movies, don't use them.

I have the same problem. I can't seem to upload edited pics. What process did you perform in order to upload images?

Windows ME / XP and WIA drivers issue:
When connecting a camera containing a CF card in it, on which there are images made with this camera. Upon opening and changing an image, it is not possible to view this image on the camera's TFT display again. In such events nothing, or at best a question mark is displayed on the TFT display.

Above issue is neither a defect from the camera, nor a bug in Windows XP or ME. It is in fact a consequence of the variations possible within the standard of JPEG images together with the transparency of image operations when using WIA drivers.

Don't hold your breath - he hasn't been here since August 2004. Irfanview is still available and will do an excellent job of resizing and renaming images.
