Hey all,

I've recently bought the 50 AF-1 flash from Metz and I really enjoy using it. Since I am completely new to this I have a few questions that I hope you can answer to get me going. :)

1. How do I trigger this flash with my 60D's internal flash?
2. When I set the flash to E-TTL HSS, will it then work with shutter speeds faster than 1/250s?
3. What is the lightning bolt button for? Upon pressed it just fires a long flash.

Thanks!

1. You have to set up both the flash and camera menus. I have the 50 AF-2 and the instructions are on section 19 - Wireless Remote Flash (page 140). Your manual should be fairly similar.

2. Yes as long as the flash is on the camera. You cannot achieve HSS off camera unless you use a PW or similar device.

3. It is not a button. It is a cover to where you can plug an optional power pack if you require it. In my manual it is called the P76 and it is expensive.

Thanks I'll take a look at the manual!
Btw, I think you have the 58 AF-2 since there is no 50 AF-2 afaik.

The lightning bolt I was referring to, really is a button and it can be pressed. (See pic, green button)

The green button is just a test fire button. It could be handy when setting up other optical slaves flashes in assuring everything is working properly. Other than that, it just tells you the flash is ready.

I have the Metz 48 AF-1 and love it. Looking to upgrade to the 58 AF-1 or AF-2 at some point. Excellent flashes with even more features than the manufacturer.

If you push the + and - buttons at the same time you can scroll through different features including optical slave (SL) I beleive and manual setup settings, etc. The flashes red focus assist light will begin blinking when in slave mode. There is a small hole in the bottom side, on my 48AF-1 anyhow, that must be able to "see" the triggering flash.

Have fun

50AF doesn't have high voltage input,
the socket that you mentioned is a USB where you can upgrade the firmware

There is some confusion as to exactly which Metz flash digital-paradise has tongki. He typed 50 AF-2 which doesn't exist and may have meant 58 AF-2, which does have the external power option. He'd have to confirm that before knowing whether he is mistaken in his description. You are right though, the 50 AF-1 only comes with the usb port and no external power port.

God Bless

Metz 58 AF-2 is a nice flash,
the time when Metz launched it, I was in there,
and 58AF-2 hasn't been released anywhere while I want it,
only 50AF came out earlier and it was the first batch

Well you obviously have no use for the flash given you don't even know what you have!:)

Would you consider trading it for a virtually brand new 48 AF-1? I'll pay shipping on both and throw in an older Compaq laptop with Windows 97 if needed.

I really would like to have that flash but unfortunetly will have to wait a while before upgrading.

Take care,
Ralph
