I user LR3 to do some basic editing on my Raw photos and then use the Edit In option to export to CS5 to run some actions and tweak. From there I just choose Save in CS5 and it brings my edited image back to LR3 as I would expect.

However, it saves the CS5 edited image as a TIFF and I would prefer to save it as a PSD file. I have looked under preferences and cannot see where to specify the default file type when saving in CS5. I thought PSD was the default file type and confused on why it is defaulting to a TIFF file.

Any help would be appreciated!

If I recall correctly, it's in your Lightroom preferences, not your Photoshop preferences.

Or, you can do "Save As" in Photoshop, but these don't always automatically show back up in Lightroom. If they don't show up, you can Import/Add (not copy or move) to get them in your catalog, or just do "Synchronize folder" to add them.

You'll also need to make sure "Maximize Compatibility" is turned on in Photoshop preferences, for Lightroom to be able to render the previews and export the end results.

As per Nathan's comment:

In Lightroom: Edit > Preferences... > External Editing > File Format

Thanks to you both! Never thought of checking LR for file preference in CS5. Duh.
