Hey guys,
I will be in Shanghai for three months and after that in Beijing for 3 months. Can you give me some suggestions for photography spots?

I have been to Bejing before and know the following:

Beijing (will go there again for sure):
- forbidden city
- winter palace
- the hill behind the forbidden city
- the hutongs
- the great wall at badaling

Shanghai:
- the Bund

Maybe you just post your tips or send me a pn and i will combine it in the first post.

I'm ntersted in landscape as well.

Thanks guys

I used to work in Shanghai, I'd head for the Bund at night, great place, very active. Wander around the French Concession, nice architecture there. The Old City is a good wander around area too. I found interesting photo opportunities almost everywhere there. Will you have a driver? Having someone to drive you around makes this much easier.

Beijing:

Temple of Heavenly Peace Park is a wonderful photo venue where Beijing residents go to relax and enjoy themselves.

See my Beijing, Shanghai and other galleries on the smugmug link below...

Just wandering around Beijing or Shanghai will put you in a position to shoot numerous great pictures...

Night markets and department stores are other areas for photos.

BTW: China, IMO, is one of the safest countries in the world for foreign tourists AND no one seems to mind if you take their picture...

A good hint is to carry a card written in Chinese with your return address. That way, you can just hop into a taxi and show the address to the driver.

Try to shoot at a subway station with long exposure at 6pm
not kidding, you will get something you never have a chance to get from all other cities

advices from a Chinese...

Seriously, fro shanghai, go to the riverside of Huangpu River, shoot the beatiful skylines with your uwa and even try pana

For Beijing, you really want to try to shoot people in the streets, just like the photos above, that represents the core of Chinese culture. Try to observe carefully, guess you will be satisfied.
Tian'anmen Square, and Summer Palace are best places to shoot for me.

Fly me away.

Hi all, I'll be heading to Zhuhai, Guangdong in a couple weeks. I'll be working most of the time but I hope to get out and about. I'll be there for a couple weeks unless the job goes fast and easy but they usually don't. I'm not much for shooting people but I love architecture, textures and landscapes. If anyone has been to Zhuhai, I would love some idea on where to shoot.

Although no one, in China, seems to mind their picture being taken... It is often advantageous to use a longer focal length in order to get shots of people without their being aware of your camera and changing their attitude...

There is an excellent shot in Tiannemen Square which I did not quite accomplish because my tour was moving on and I didn't have the time to shoot exactly how I wanted. But, a long lens image of the Chinese People's Army Sentry with the great portrait of Mao in the BG is a great shot. Sort of like, but not quite like this shot. I wanted to stick my 1.4x TC on my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens, and frame the sentry with Mao's face in the background. but, didm't have the time.

ha i think i have the exact same photo as above.
I thought the hill behind the forbidden city would be good for an overview of it (as i got no good photos inside, and then when i saw the hill on exit i thought it was a winner), but didnt get anything special. Grab a sleeping bag and stay a night somewhere on the great wall and see if you can shoot the stars with the wall in the foreground. Wandering around squares and parks as has been suggested is always good - the Chinese do some strange and wonderfull things in the parks. A lot of it really needs video to do it justice (walking backwards etc is hard to show in a photo...)

You're right it is a perfect place for panoramic schots of the forbidden city

I'm also headed there this year.. Shanghai(and area)/Guangzhou/south Vietnam. I'm so excited to get some photos on this trip. I'll be bringing my T4i with the 18-135STM lens and the 50mm 1.8.

First post, btw. I'll be watching this thread for any suggestions.

If you visit Saigon (AKA: Ho Chi Minh City) make sure that you take some type of river cruise, that is where some of the most interesting sites are located...
