It was the AF assembly that had to be replaced...its back now..

Wonder what could have happened...
Mine got another bump in its life recently... well, still works fine - got taken out today for a little walk, came across this little fellow, I think he/she/it won't object about its photo being made public .

Unfortunately I don't have a proper calibrated monitor available to me... (just my laptop with an IGZO screen, poor thing - 1.4kg light and photo editing....)

It's electronics...it dies eventually. I went back and looked, Ive had the lens for over 5 years now. and it was used when I got it.
Going to run it through FoCal again to make sure they didn't screw up my AF Microadjustments...

Well that's the point, electronics normally last very long - at least as long as they don't overheat.
5 years would be a rather short lifespan...

In the same application, electronics will last longer than mechanics unless the mechanical parts are regularly maintained (cleaned, oiled, inspected for damage).
Electronics you build once and that's it.

If you want to kill electronics, the best way would be heat - but even then its a lot of it over a long time... e.g. overclocking a CPU with inadequate cooling.

I said I had had it for over 5 years, and it was used when I got it..

And I work with computers daily..electronics SHOULD last a very long time, but my own experience has taught me that certainly isn't always the case for a variety of reasons. It only takes 1 small problem on a circuit board to render the whole board useless..

That being said, its fixed...and at a much cheaper price than even a used one would cost me.

5 years isn't a long time...

One laptop had some graphics issues (under certain conditions) after 6-7 years or maye more. The thing with computers is, the components that fail either are hot (CPU, GPU) or don't like heat (capacitors) and are too close to a heat source.

Unless you leave the lens lying in the sun it should never get substantially hot or hot enough to add extra wear to the electronics.

if you sent it to Canon...they reset to factory defaults for everything...my 5D2 was setup perfect for me...they reset EVERYTHING...I am still finding things over a year later!

How do you "factory reset" a lens...?
Didn't know you could change settings on a lens..

I don't know...but Canon can figure it out I am sure...

And by that, I really mean...we all know that Canon lenses seem to have minor variations between each one...yours might have been perfect before, but that could have been out of spec...lenses can be calibrated internally can they not? Sigma does it with the USB dock...

That's where I was going. If it was re-calibrated my settings are no longer going to be accurate..

I knew what you meant...I think..

I've been looking at these pictures and drooling for this lens for a few years now. Today I finally bought a nice well kept used lens - and it seems to be one of the soft ones Definitely not comparable to my 70-200 f/2.8, apart from the AF speed. Absolutely bummed...

edit: took it to Canon service, let's see if they can help.
