I noticed my photos on this lens were soft after about a year, too, and sent it to Canon for adjustment (lens only). When it came back it was night and day difference.

Thanks for the reply. What did it cost, if you don't mind?

So how many of you guys contemplating the jump to the mk 2?

I'm actually thinking of dumping it altogether for some primes... waiting to see what happens in the 35mm group over the next few months.

Actually got this photo printed in a local English free magazine. Not the greatest of feats, as I have a few friends that use nothing but P&S get multiples there over the years, but I'll take it.

Quite happy with the mk1 tbh; if the mk2 had IS I'd be more tempted. Like some others, I'd rather replace it with primes if I had to get rid of it.

I was fortunate and got it in just under a year, so it was warranty. I'm not sure what it would have cost if I had to pay them. I know it was a relatively quick process, like 10 days from ship out to received, so they only had it for a few days.

My Brothers kids school put on some fireworks after their school fete. They must turn a good profit because these went on for ages, so much so my youngest asked "are these nearly finished?"

In Japan, it takes about 1 week, and costs 10,000 yen ($125 or so). I believe it's slightly cheaper in the US. $100 roughly.

I finally bought a very lightly used (less than a year) 24-70L locally....I was thinking to buy 24-70L Mk II but couldn't justify another $1300. I still need to test it out but the seller was telling me that I may need to do some micro adjustment for this lens as he has to do some with his 7d....Is it true that even Canon expensive L lenses need some adjustments....if so, how should i know how much I need to adjust (sorry, new to this microadjustment thing). Or may be I don't need to adust anything on my 5d mark II.

Thanks, Pendu.

Don't touch a thing in the micro adjustment until you've given it a good try-out....both at a specific target if you can, and in the field. Be scrupulously thorough, use a tripod etc, and take notes.

If you just can't get a sharp picture with AF then try using Live view at full magnification and manually focus then compare results. If there is an obvious anomoly then by all means micro adjust. Of course you will be doing so at the 70mm focal length, as any error will be most noticeable there. At shorter FLs the errors will appear to be less.

Growing old disgracefully!

I don't usually post pictures of my daughter...too afraid they will end up next to some half nekkid girl in the post above or below...but I have been trying to learn to shoot back into the light, to get that great golden backlighting on hair and what not...this is one from the other night that I was happy with...shot with my favorite lens, my 24-70L...I will never get rid of this lens.

I took couple of sample pictures and they look pretty sharp to me. I won't touch the micro adustment as I don't want to mess things up (thanks for the tip) specially when I have no idea how to do that :-). I will take some more test shots at wide focal length this weekend and post some test shots for you guys to see if they look fine to you as well.

Thanks for the help.

Don't be afraid of the settings in your camera. I learned a lot going through MA with this lens, and it convinced me to send it to Canon for adjustment, which made a big difference. I was glad I had tried first, though.
