Japanese EOS 7D firmware update

Dear All,

I bought my eos 7D in 2009 in Japan
Like shown in this thread, I too can only select Japanese or English as language. So my firmware either is specific, or can detect some markers in the hardware and knows better than displaying tens of languages.

Now, I am considering updating the firmware with the coming 2.x version.
But I am afraid to brick my camera by downloading an english or any other version of the firmware – and somehow, I can't navigate my way through the Japanese website to download the appropriate firmware.

Has anyone attempted to update a "Japanese" EOS 7D with a "non-japanese" firmware ?

some shops in Israel sell cameras that are bought in japan
(easy to tell because of the different rebel name)
the shops are then installing firmware that are USA based (i use the term loosely) thus converting Kiss X camera to XXXD
i am pretty certain of it (but can not guarntee)
my guess you can do the same with the 7D
having said all that - i think you should simply email canon service to get a simple answer
(the few time i had questions i got good direct answers)

You will not brick it. I bought my 5D3 in Thailand and I can use any firmware with no problems. My last update came from Canon USA.

the shops are then installing firmware that are USA based (i use the term loosely) thus converting Kiss X camera to XXXD

There is no such thing as "converting" as they are identical except for the name on the outside.

Well, they aren't identical since cameras sold in Japan don't give you all the language options cameras sold elsewhere does. Even with the same firmware installed.

The Firmware is all the same.... the Japanese domestic market models are hardware driven to only show English and Japanese... this has been discussed before many times..

Why do this not sure

All the best

Well, Thank you for your reply.

I will call canon and ask.
Then I will report back, only if I feel the courage to try the firmware update.

(On one hand, the 2.x firmware seems to bring along nice features. On the other hand, my dos 7D works perfectly with its current software. I would be a shame to break it out of greed).
