Just wondering if any one out there knows of a tele extender that would allow you to maintain auto focus on the 100 -400 L. Thanks guys

The Kenko one, with a few of the pins taped over will AF....but it's hit 'n' miss.

Really, if you want more length, it's time to think about selling a kidney and getting a 500 or 600mm lens!

What is it you need the extra reach for?

EDIT: Just had a peek at your website.......nice stuff! But nothing I can see so far that needs a really long FL lens.

I don't really need it, just a wondering for maybe some more birding. I think a 300mm 2.8 would work just as well for what I like to do but the zoom would be a cheaper route.

Mine did AF really well with a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x on a 550D, 7D, 5D2 and 5D3. I say 'did' because I've since sold it, but the AF worked really well. It was fast and accurate and only started hunting in really low light, in ordinary cloudy daylight it was great though.

Ahhh....

Well, I've got the 100-400L and love it. VERY versatile, fast AF and lovely colours/contrast/etc.

Oh, and the price?! Mucho-cheapo!!!

Of course, other lenses can do "better", but if you want to do birding, you can almost never have enough FL...so it's better to learn about flight-paths, favourite feeding spots, etc. And make a "hide", too. That saves a ton of FL.

Pop into the birding threads and you can find a lot of advice which will save your kidney!!!

Regards for now,

Simon :D

A 100-400 with 1.4X @ f8 works well on a 1D mkIII, the problem I had was the narrow field of view. I was in Alaska trying to shoot breaching whales, and by the time I found them in the viewfinder there was only splash!

Unless you're using a 1D then AF will not work properly with a 1.4x TC. People say it works, but just ask them for a few images of birds in flight. Then you find that they're using a strange new definition of 'work'.

My experience with a 30D and 5D2 as well.

Kenko 1.4 works great for me and no pin taping required.

My experience as well. I laugh everytime I read one of these threads and the same people keep saying it doesn't work. Have you guys purchased a Kenko and tried it? I use mine with my 400 5.6 on a T3i and unless its really overcast or getting dark it focuses pretty quickly.
