That would depend on what you shoot and what other lenses you have now? The Canon 1D Mark III will be a lot cheaper then a new Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

First, you need to know the basic, fundamental answer for any lens use or question, field of view (often called focal length). Until you know the field of view you want, there is no way you can decide what lens you want.

I have the the first gen f/2.8, its a great lens and IS probably makes it even better !
Following on from the quote above from Patrick, If you dont have a decent amount of good lenses, the 1D MK III is not going to go as well as a cheaper camera with a 70-200.
The 1D is $7000 on amazon, the 70-200 is $2240.30.
_______________
If i were you
i would buy a 5dmk iii with 24-105($4300) and then the 70-200 (thats if you want to spend over 6and a half thousand dollars

Get the 70-200 2.8 II. The river of life will bring you a new camera body eventually ;)

OP, hard to make a recommendation without a list of current gear beyond just a body.

Huh? A 1DX is $7000. A used 1D III would be about $1,500.
