Well after about a month of frustrating over an ultra wide, I just bought the Canon 10-22. This was the most frustrating purchase I have made in years. I really do not like variable f lenses, prefering constant instead. However, the only constant I could find was the tokina f4 and f4 does not really give you much of an advantage. So, basing my decision on actual photos taken with the various ultra wides (Sigma, Tokina, Tamron, and Canon) I decided on the Canon. I picked it up for $639 new so I think I did alright on it also. Looking forward to getting it.

I hope I will love it. The 24-70 is just SO WIDE sometimes. I needed something wider and this seemed to fit the bill perfectly, almost.

Doc ... I've been contemplating these wide angles too an leaning toward the Canon. Going out west in June so I still have plenty of time to purchase. Hope you enjoy yours.

I enjoy this lens a lot. As was mentioned in another thread, watch your toes ~ it is easy to get them in the shot. :)

I've also been contemplating the super-wide zooms, but I keep wondering if the Canon is worth $140-200 more than the Tokina or Sigma.

Congrats, Doc, on taking the plunge!

Dunno about the Sigma but I looked at the Canon and Tokina very seriously, along with some other options, and certainly prefered the Tokina. The price difference was significant at the time. Had the Canon been the same price it would have been a very close call. Both can produce great results.

I'm looking for a wide lens too but considering the sigma 10-20 and the tokina 12-24.
It seems like everyone that has them hold on to them and there's nothing on the used market.

Why did you choose the canon?

You will be amazed the lens is feather light, it's the lightest lens I own. That said it's very well built, AF speed beats both my L's (focal length helps), as close to my 24-70L in build as an EF-S could get IMO. But none the less still a consumer zoom. The 22mm end still has more distortion then I like, so I'll use my Sigma for anything above 18mm, but the 10mm end is like butter.

You will have lots of fun for sure :)

I am really looking forward to getting this lens. The main thing that swayed me toward the Canon was the great photos I kept seeing. Also, the price that I got it for was not that much more than the others so that did not realy factor in.

Congrats Doc. It's a good lens. My guess is you will be using it well stopped down at least at the wide end so I don't think the variable f-stop will be an issue for you.
