I'm guessing that you won't be hand-holding this giant mack-truck of a lens... and is mounted on a tripod, in which case you probably won't benefit that much from IS (and you have to shoot fast anyway)
Besides... i don't think IS works w/ TCs(?) (correct me if i'm wrong)
based on that... i'd rather just get the non IS. (unless you have the money + just want that IS since it's newer... in which case I'll just go for that if i were you. haha!)

Go for the IS. With a TC on, you're looking at min s/s of 1/400 on ff and 1/640 (or faster) on crop. This is a heavy lens, and IS will come in handy.

Yes, IS works with TC's.

Both 300's are very hand holdable.
I own the non-is. But if my main goal was shooting wildlife, i'd probably go with the IS (if cost is no factor).
I held mine for a 4+ hour walk today with no problems.

Here is one from today with the 300/2.8 non-is + 1.4x mk1 TC.
SS was 1/640.

I managed to get some alright ones at SS 1/200, but i try not to go below 1/320.

i voted for IS, only because down the road if you want to sell it people seem to expect it.

Agree, this is a newer lens and I suspect that Canon will support it for a longer period of time. This equates to holding its used value...
