EOS 7D + 100-400mm for wildlife photography

Comparable are the following:

Option 1:
5D Mark III and 100-400mm would not work for wildlife. So only option with this is adding a 1.4 Extender, but then image quality is expected to be poor.

Option 2:
7D and 100-400mm would result in 640mm though and aperture 5.6, so this is a real option!

Option 3:
And 5D Mark III with 200-400mm/4.0 and 1.4 extender would result in 560mm (which is O.K. for me) and aperture 5.6mm, so this is comparable with option 2. But here I expect superior images over option 2. But high weight and price!!!!

This. It is a long zoom range to rotate through. Love how quickly i can move through it with push-pull.

What about using the canon 2x mark 3?

Does anyone know the difference in iq between the 2x mark 2 vs 3?

I have this combo and I like it very much. Push-pull zoom is very handy.

Not the best that this combo is capable of but just one example.

Surprised at how many times the 100-400 gets bashed for the push pull design. It really is very easy and faster than than twisting a ring to zoom.

I am using 5D3 and 100-400L without an extender and it works pretty darn well thank you very much. I actually think my photo has never been better (coming from T2i).

100-400 has been my main lens for two South African photo safaris and numerous trips out west. I rarely needed my 500mm. This shot was taken in June with 5DIII using 100-400, F8, and ISO 3200. Works for me.

According to the early info/pictures on the test models of the 200-400, it has a built in 1.4x that you can engage by flipping a switch. Pretty neat feature if it ends up on the final version.

Great shot. I am going on safari to the Serengeti with the same set up. If my shots come out as good as yours I will be happy.
