I posted this in the wedding forum as well but thought it might get some response here as well. Ok so last night I had my first wedding reception & exit featuring glow sticks - pretty cool effect but omg did I have a hard time capturing the actual look of the glow sticks! If i got my image without using my flash (which I bounce for the reception usually) I got the people lit well but you don't see the "glow" of the glow sticks - looks like the people are holding pink or purple wands. If I exposed with no flash I could get the glow of the sticks but you couldn't see the people (especially since the majority of the people were people of color. What's the trick to this? The exit was even more frustrating for me - the guests lined a sidewalk & waved their glow sticks but for me to get the bride & groom lit I used the videographers light, which, of course, lit them well enough but again, the magic of the glow stick light is lost.

you can try multiple exposures... or use multiple lights and flag them to have lights fall only on the faces you want to light and not interfere with the sticks

at a wedding, people will most likely not wait for you to set lights up and sit still for the multiple shots you will need to do this... bet to capture what you can, and manipulate it afterwards...

The glow sticks are really dim so you need to match a low light source with a high output source which is your flash. Take a look through the reincarnations of the night club photos thread in the people section https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=895331
There are some really nice examples of high ISO, dragged shutter, low flash output or no flash shots where this is done very well.
