Print prices

I was taking photos at a wedding reception last evening and the caterer came up to me and asked that I take a pic of him and his 2 assistants. He ordered 3 8 X 10's on the spot without even seeing them. He's local and I'll be hand delivering them. I spent a whole 30 seconds taking the shots and they turned out good. I'm not a portrait photographer so I've never been in this situation before. I go thru WHCC for all my wildlife prints. I'm curious as to what others would charge for these 3 prints.

I don't have a normal print price. When I do candid photography, I charge an hourly rate and give them the CD with all the images. I realize that's not the way to make the big bucks so I don't need to hear that. I'm a wildlife photographer just picking up a few extra bucks and having something to do in my free time.

I usually would just charge the cost of prints for anyone in the event industry. say $10 for 8x10? This person might potentially refer you to a client so you don't want to piss them off by charging $50 for each 8x10.

I would say figure out all your costs and memorize them for the future. This way if someone asks you for an 8x10, they can pay you on the spot or there won't be any issues when you show up to collect.

In this case I'd say 5-6 times cost of prints.

Caters can be a good source of business so don't charge him too much. He can recommend you to others people for their events.

Thanks guys, for your replies. Although I'm a bit surprised that with 239 views, only a couple people have advice. I decided not to charge what I'd normally charge for a wildlife photo. There was no additional expense for taking the pics, so I need to take that into consideration. I'll probably go with $15 per photo, about what his restaurant charges for a plate of ribs. Though I don't think he does a lot of catering, something good could still come from this.

i was shooting for a local junior team and i was asked for 2 5x7s with an offer of $10 each...

i printed 8x10s because of the crop i had done when editing at the same price...

$10 is what i charge for an 8x10. $7 for a 5x7...

if you go with $15, then that seems good too...

Since I have a day job, and you were paid to be there anyway, I'd probably say "I'd normally charge $X, but how about a dinner for two, I loved the food @ the wedding (or whatever you feel is fair). You maintain that your work has value, and sometimes a new connection is worth more than a couple bucks...

£10 ($15?) here for a 10x8.

Charge appropriately.

Offering it in exchange for services kills your value.

Food is a professional service. If you're going to value yourself, you must also show that you value others.
