Hey guys,
I will start by saying this post is primarily dedicated to wedding photography using an on camera flash AND triggering off camera flashes. I currently am using a 580 on camera and YN560s off camera for reception hall lighting. In a perfect world I'd be able to use the 580 in ETTL and the 560's on manual (duh) and trigger all 3 at the same time. Right now I am running modified pt-04 triggers (which have some range, but every so often aren't consistent). I"m looking for a more consistent setup.

Yes, it's a test shot, but here's what the setup looks like.

5d II + 580ex on camera
bracket + modified pt-04 + pc sync cable

Now my issue I BELIEVE is that the cable from the trigger to the camera is not a great connection. I'm ALWAYS pressing in the cable (on both ends) to ensure a good connection. Do you think it would be better to run a pc sync-cold shoe with locking pc sync cables? The 5d II doesn't have a screwlock pc sync does it? Is there a better way to do this?

ALSO ; would anyone recommend the rf602s as a pretty consistent triggering system? Ideally, i'd like to stay cheap for reception stuff just in case someone knocks them down. I know the stratos allow ETTL pass through + remote triggering but they are much more expensive. I do have a set of pixel kings that I use (and like) but they are a bit pricier and would rather not take the chance.

PS as far as range goes, the modified PT04 gets some good range. you can see in this shot that they did in fact trigger the lights from a pretty good distance.

and then another 'test' shot from a while ago

If you are using a 580EX rather than a 580EXII, Flash Zebra has a modified foot that includes a mini jack to fire a remote trigger. I used one often (PCB Cyber Syncs) to fire other speedlites or monolights. I velcroed to trigger to the 580EX.

The 5DII has a screw to secure the PC cable, Flash Zebra also sells those.

RF-602 would also work since it has a cable that will go between the trigger and the camera with screw collars on both ends.

PS, make your JPGs a smaller so they fit onto the screen.

As an aside, the flash blasting the wall and ceiling so far in the background is distracting for me.

thanks david,
im currently using a 580ex II and have the 580ex for backup. I may try out the rf602, and hope they have less interference since they are on 2.4gHz opposed to 433mHz.

and the picture was literally as I was packing up, didn't think to take the trigger off (kinda impressed by the range though).

Dan,
If you get the locking PC cord, your current units may be just fine.
The PC connection is a pain unless you can keep it tight with a screw lock.
If you like the bracket, I think there are some ETTL cables around that have a hot shoe or other PC connection, that will permit you to put the flash on the bracket.

Yea, the last minute shots are sometimes the most fun. LoL

I think the screwlock is a good recommendation - I was having all sorts of problems until I got mine.

By the way, my setup is almost identical to yours. However, instead of using a bracket to hold my trigger, I just rubber band it to the flash. I use Cactus V5's and couldnt be happier.

hey Bryan~
a. i love your work
b. I used to hold mine, but with teh 24-70 as my primary reception lens it made it awkward to zoom in and out. for some reason if the antenna isn't pointing up they don't fire well.

I've got a set of the YN622's on order, I may just end up using those so I can do both without the bracket...OR just order a set of the rf602's for $50
