Has anyone tried this combo? What I would love to know is which AF pattern you get on the 5d3 when using the Sigma?

Yes I'm using it and it works awesome. Way better that it did on the 5DII. During wedding I normally use AI servo linked to a point and it almost never misses a shot. And that's at F1.4! This was virtually impossible to do with the 5DII.

For extreme highspeed I do use the 70-200LII as the sigma can't keep up but the combo 5DIII&85Sigma is my main workhorse.

Took these using this combo on a alternative/Gothic festival in Utrecht. There wide open to show the sharpness of this combo

just bumping this up again for some more input.. anyone else use this combo, that previously used it on a 5D2?

I've got two copies of the Sigma 85 I'm testing on the 5D2, and they both appear to back focus a bit within ~10 feet of the subject, but appear to be pretty close to in-focus at larger distances (center point). Just curious if this is coming from the 5D2 AF weakness, or the lenses themselves, and if moving to a 5D3 improved things..

Great, looking forward to hearing your thoughts.. It's a solid lens, and I plan on moving to Mk III anyway, so if it's just the AF sensors on the 5D2, then I'll probably keep it.. Just not sure right now.

I have not noticed specific focusing issues on the 5D2, but focusing is generally better on the 5D3.

Hrm.. Interesting.. That's why I ordered two lenses, was to have a baseline, but sadly the serial numbers are 2 apart (even though they're from different retailers?!), but they seem to have the same behavior.

I guess for me, the concern stems from the Sigma's "unsure" AF.. I feel like with my other Canon L lenses I hit the focus button and it grabs focus. If I do it with the Sigma, it grabs focus, but then if I tap the focus button again, it might shift a little, and the again, and again.. It just doesn't seem to be able to lock onto small areas (even with contrast) from 10-20 ft convincingly.

Just not sure if that's 5D2 AF sensor, or these two lenses.. might have to bite the bullet and order a 5D3 just to find out.

I noticed the same behaviour on the first copy of the sigma 85 I ordered, so I sent it back.
The copy I kept focusses very accurate and fast, didn't need any microadjustment on my 5D II and +8 on my 5D III (but could be a problem of my 5D III, I also noticed a frontfocus issue which appears only in artificial light and with all my lenses... )
