PayPal Invoice Question

So I am trying to make a purchase, and the seller asks for my PayPal address so that he can send me an invoice (which I've done a few times before with no issue). I get an email with a link that asks for my PayPal address and password, and shows the invoice detail. It is an HTTPS address. I don't enter any info.

I log in to PayPal separately, and see no sign of the invoice I'm pretty certain that in the past the invoice popped up in my account. So I call PayPal and they say it should show up in my account. So I've asked the seller to re-send the invoice.

Just wondering if anyone else has done this recently, and what the experience was? I follow the rule of not entering my password unless I've logged on to the site directly.

Thanks.

Looks like a scam to get you to send them your login details, then they can send money to themselves, from your credit card or bank account (or both).

You did right, always go direct through paypals site, anything else is a scam.

Yea, It should show up in your main history panel as a money request from the seller as well if I remember correctly.

Bingo. Everyone is right. Don't do it unless it shows up in your PayPal account. Great call and good job staying security aware!

If by chance it was a POTN member and nothing ever shows up, please PM a Mod and explain the situation. If (and it's certainly an "if" at this point) it's a scammer, then he/she will be banned from POTN forever.

Happy to report this was a false alarm. Seller entered the invoice through a mobile app. He re-sent through normal channels and it comes up as expected in my account. Transaction not on POTN, but the seller has a very positive reputation, so I was more confused initially than thinking it was a scam. Thanks for the quick responses though -- it's good to know the community here is ready to lend solid advice when asked.

Hopefully this thread is at least a good reminder not to enter your account info anywhere but the normal sign in page. We all seem to agree on that!

I'm always careful about what URLs I am being sent to when paying with Paypal, but I still change my password after any transaction where I enter my password. Many times when paying with Paypal on a site, you then have to log into your account to authorize the payment. Even when everything looks completely legit, the next thing I do is change my password. Only takes a few seconds.

I believe you are never supposed to give out your password to anyone to anything, even Chase bank reminds me daily to never give out the password even if Chase asks me (scam alert) !!
