or
"Im compensating for poor image quality good sir." *continue shooting with camera to your face, then hope they walk away before your arms tire out holding it there so long*

+1.
Or the most smart-ass thing I can think of is, "I'm compensating for leading a dull life and this lens allows me to hear all kinds of outrageously stupid comments";);)

I'm compensating for my lack of social skills and my inability make small talk. The camera and giant lens make for an excellent security blanket so I don't have to talk to people.

(usually gets a nervous chuckle)

I'm compensating for the dreadfully low lighting in the auditorium/theater.

My response usually is: "you gotta go big or stay home".

The longest I have is 100-400mm so I haven't come across with that question yet. but I would like to reply with "None, but I do have big hands and large feet" ;)

But I've had a few "how much for that big lens?" or "wow! that must have cost plenty" types of comments.

LMAO. Had a girl ask me once.. "I noticed you have large hands and feet. Is what they say true?"

I loved the responses here... Especially the big white and hard comment. LMAO!!!
