I've just got a G1-X for holidays with the intention of leaving my 7D at home. I'm a bit worried that I'll miss the DSLR so to keep my options open a bit I was thinking of getting a 58mm Lee adapter so I could use my big stopper and maybe ND grads on the G1-X.

I think the standard (rather than the wide angle) adapter should be ok but can anyone confirm this?

Has anyone used ND grads on the G1-X?

Well I've ordered a standard adapter so I'll let you know how I get on... although I think the Lee adapter is going to arrive before the G1-X thread adaptor thing does!

I use 85mm Hitech ND grads on my G1-X with a Cokin P holder and get good results, you need to take care when sliding the filters in, hold the filter holder with one hand and slide the filter with the other, the G1-X lens when extended is not as solid as a DSLR lens and need a little extra support.

I gave them a quick try yesterday and got strange light leaks of some sort... a semi circle of light top and bottom of the image. Anyone know where this could be coming from? I could see them on the screen when composing, used a magazine to shade the camera until they disappeared but they were still there on the finished image!

I've just done another test and it disappears at longer focal lengths and if I use the filter resting on the end of the lens so it must be something to do with the distance between the front element and filter at wider focal lengths. Maybe I should have got the WA adaptor!

The more I play with the G1-X the more I wish I'd followed my heart and got the Fuji X100!!

Panic over... I just found a thin gap top and bottom of the bayonet adaptor for the lens which is where the light was coming in, a sliver of black gaffer tape has fixed that!

I would imagine Canon regard using a Cokin, Lee etc filter system as non preferred due to the added weight to the extended lens barrel. That might be why they have not brought out the heavy wide angle and telephoto adaptors for the G1x.
If you use them I would do as QUADPHOTO has suggested and use some form of support.

Anybody used the built in ND filter yet to full effect.

Canon 5D mk3, 50mm 1.4, 17-40L, 70-200L, 100-400L, Canon 100L macro, Canon 2 x G1X, Speedliite 430 EX all supported by Gitzo and Benro.

The wide angle and telephoto adaptors usually fix onto the camera at the base of the lens rather than the lens itself, a system which seems to be in place on the G1-X to me with the removable bit that would have been better used as an aperture or manual zoom ring.

The Lee holder is quite light but good point about supporting it when inserting the filter
