If you do that you have a disaster in the waiting. There are many that assume long gear lists will automatically be covered under their home owners policy. At least in Canada that is not always the case as I discovered when I was first building up my gear list. The insurance company deemed that I had too much and insisted that I get a separate rider (and resulting invoice) to ensure the coverage was adequate. It wasn't all that much in the grander scheme of things and it sure gives you peace of mind. Going back to your car to find your gear missing has to be a gut wrenching experience. My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I can;t imagine anyone taking that kind of a risk to work uninsured. It isn't a case of IF you will need that backup, but WHEN. As a side note, many venues won't even let you in the door without proper liability insurance.

If my whole camera bag were stolen or something, obviously it would be worth having but just for a piece of dropped equipment, it would still cost $500 to have a used camera body or lens replaced. I'm not suggesting that it still wouldn't be worth it and I'm leaning towards taking the coverage, just wanted to point out that my agent was not offering me full coverage with a zero deductible. I would highly recommend you go back through your policy and read it carefully. I also have State Farm and they state the following: We insure for accidental direct physical loss or damage to the property covered except loss or damage caused directly or indirectly by any of the following. Such loss or damage is excluded regardless of any other cause or event which contributes concurrently or in any sequence to the loss or damage. 1. War, including: a. undeclared war; b. civil war; c. insurrection; d. rebellion; e. revolution; f. warlike act by a military force or military personnel; g. destruction, seizure or use for a military purpose; or h. any effect of any of these. Discharge of a nuclear weapon will be deemed a warlike act even if accidental. 2. Seizure or destruction under quarantine or customs regulations. 3. Any order or law of a governmental or municipal authority. 4. Risks of contraband, illegal transportation or trade. 5. Nuclear Hazard, meaning: a. any nuclear reaction, radiation or radioactive contamination, all whether controlled or uncontrolled or however caused; and b. any effect of any of these. Loss caused by the nuclear hazard is not considered loss caused by fire, explosion or smoke. Direct loss by fire resulting from the nuclear hazard is covered. 6. Mechanical breakdown, wear and tear, gradual deterioration and inherent vice. 7. Vermin or insects. cory1848 wrote in post #14826143 Until you use it for commercial purposes. Then its worthless. I don't see how it's worthless. I pay $125/year for Personal Articles Coverage and it's a small price to pay if something happens to my gear...especially if it's all stolen. $125 vs. $11,000 = no brainer. 5D Mark III Gripped ~ 7D Gripped ~ EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM ~ EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM ~ EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM ~ EF 50mm f/1.8 II ~ 550EX ~ 600EX-RT

Did you read the last part of my post? Worthless if you use it for COMMERCIAL usage. If you sell images, or have a business, insurance companies, especially SF, will not honor a personal articles policy. If you do no commercial work, then you should be fine, but SF has been known to not honor coverage because shooters "appear" to be in business by just having a website. Gear List

Good luck finding a decent policy for commercial usage for $10k in gear for under $500. If you know of one, let me know.
