I could never afford either one, but the prices seem to be pretty close, so why would anyone get a 1DMkIV when they can get a 1DX at almost the same price ?

1) They are not the same price, if you can find one new, it is still going to be at least $1500 less than a 1DX.
2) They are not the same camera, and some people really love the APS-H format over the FF, plus they cannot give up on supported AF at f8.
3) They are really close in IQ performance, less than a stop in raw quality, so one really has to weigh in whether they need the 1DX or can "make due" with the 1D4, and pocket the difference.

Good condition used ones seem to be selling around $3,500, about half the price of a 1DX. The last few available new are probably asking a premium since it has been discontinued.

Some nature and sports shooters will still prefer the 1.3x crop and F8 AF ability. Also, for the moment it is a proven platform with little possibility of problems, whereas the 1DX is still hard to come by and just like any new product may have some bugs to work out. When you are running a business you might rather have what you know and not risk it at the moment when your livelihood is on the line.
