Wow, well said. Makes me want to go buy a 135.

Have you ever used one?

You are in for a treat if you have not... :D

I haven't. My 70-200 has been my go-to portrait lens, but whenever I visit the 135 photo thread, I'm blown away by the shots (and the talent!). I've been a good boy, maybe I deserve a treat...

It's always a real balancing act for me. I am strictly an amateur who is constantly seeking to improve my abilities. I believe I have wanted to re-buy every lens I've sold. The problem is that with so many lenses, my utilization of them just does not justify the cost to keep them. Invariably, a lens I have only used once or twice and then sold will be needed shortly after I sell it. I then contemplate re-purchasing it until I convince my self to differentiate between my wants and needs. Then, I overcome my cranial-rectal insertion and make due with what I've got. In ways it has actually improved my photographic skills. ie, using my 15-85 as my wide angle instead of my perceived need for the 10-22, etc.

Unfortunately yes. I did sold my 85 1.8 to get the 50 1.4 . I really miss my 85 1.8 as was so sharp comparing with 50.
I also sold my 70-200 2.8 L II and downgrade to 70-200 4.0 IS and I must say I don;t miss the 70-200 2.8 L II at all.

I agree, go get one!

They sell so often on the used market, you can easily get one for quite cheap, use it for six months and sell it for more or at least break even. Win win!! Free rental :p

This thread makes me miss my 17-40... :p

I looked back on the images I have with it on my 5D2 and they look fantastic. Such nice colors and all around great performance.

I sold my whole photography kit once, everything, except for a few odds and ends and then bought it all back a few months later...

Took some pictures for show with my 300mm f/2.8L IS this morning and almost convinced myself not to sell it.

Depends if you replaced your 17-40mm.
I sold mine and bought a Zeiss 21mm and am completely satisfied with the replacement.

About 15 years ago I dumped all my 35mm gear and just kept my medium format stuff. One of the things I got rid of was a 200 2.8L. Has to be one of my all time favorite lenses.

I've already decided I'm going to buy another one this month.

I honestly don't remember at the time what I did, but I have a Samyang 14mm and my 24-105 for the wide end on FF which does everything I want really well. But the 17-40 was a really nice zoom range on FF!

Yep, I regret selling my 24-70L and sometimes my 17-40L and my beloved 135L. But I'm looking at getting another 24-70L pretty soon. Not sure about a 17-40L but may just go with the 16-35L at some point.
