Girlfriend and I got the bright idea to drive to crater lake in the middle of the night and try to catch sunrise. Found spot that looked good, set up, and waited. Photos taken w/d800 and 16-35mm lens. The files are nice but using the thing is annoying compared to Canon, I'm really considering going back, the live view is just unbearable so it's hard to focus in the dark or twilight, lol.

467 second exposure:

Closer to sunrise, the sky turns more purple-ish:

Yeah its HDR, so sue me, I really like it =p:

Hope you like. Feel free to post your crater lake pics if you have some good ones. Probably better than mine. ;-)a

I like 1 and 3.

1 because of it's depth and the mood it conveys.

3 I like but I have an issue with it. Don't get me wrong, I love HDR and I think the image has a load of unreached potential. I don't know if you have the same issues that I have when it comes to processing sunrise HDR shots, I have one that I shot a year ago that I still mess with from time to time trying to get it right, but my issue with this image is the ground is too dark. Even then, I still wouldn't pass up putting the image up on my wall as is.

Nice job... I think your efforts were well worth it. They all came out great.

Don't feel guilty about using HDR. A lot of photographers use it and strive to produce images that benefit from the technique, but are just a tad away from viewers being able to tell that it is HDR. To me, it's just another technique like any other that is available for us to use.

I asked a photographer who was selling photos at an art fair if he used HDR. He claimed it was just 'being in the right place at the right time'. Needless to say, I didn't believe him because many of his shots were obviously HDR.

Was the HDR from a single exposure or multiple? I know the d800 has a ridiculous dynamic range.
