Heading to a coastal city called Perth soon for some R & R.

I am taking the 5dmk2.

I was going to just take the 70-200mm but my 17-40mm will be in in the next few days.

I dont want to take the whole kit.

Out of lens for city/coastal/zoo environment as these are locations I intend to visit, what lens would you take?

I have these to choose, 17-40mm, 24-105mm, 70-200mm

Since the 5Dmk2 is FF, and making note of your "coastal city" comment, I'd lean toward the 17-40mm as being the most useful. Make sure you shoot the best RAW you can so you can crop areas as needed. If you can take two I'd also take along the 24-105mm. I haven't been to Perth in 25 years but as I recall, if you stay in and about the city you won't have much need for the 70-200mm.

Thanks for the reply John,

I used to laugh at the what lens to take threads and here I am posting one!!!!!

I was thinking that taking the short focal length lens would nearly make me double up?

My idea on the 200mm was when we hit the zoo.

Took my 24-105 to Taronga zoo and most disappointed I didnt have the reach.

Would anyone suggest 17mm and 200mm as a workable combo?

For coastal city with nice shore lines, 17-40mm will do the job nicely. Remember to put a polarizer filter on the lens too.

Ahhhhhhhhh, it was hard enough to purchase the 17mm under the wifes radar, now a filter!!!!!!!!

Lol, yes already on that. Been checking out too. I will take my vari ND filter too for some smushy mushy water shots on the rocks.

Thats what my gut feeling says too, Rick.

I figured the 17mm for coast, cityscapes, panoramas and the 200mm for the bokeh and occasional yacht and animals or wildlife at the zoo and beach.

LOL, I sound like a women trying to work out what makeup to take on holidays.

Keep in mind, if you use the circular polariser at wide angles (around 17-24mm) you will probably get wildly un even skys if the sky is blue. I have had that problem here on the gold coast even with my 24mm. I usually don't use the circular polariser now unless I want to loose reflections in water. This might save you some money if you decide you don't really need it. It is a great tool to have though.

Ps. I would definitely take all three of those lenses away with you and then just take out the lens(es) you need for each day

Those 3 lenses are my travel kit, wouldn't go anywhere without all 3.
