i am new to photography but am all set up for sports and what not. my main game is rodeo i do a lot of their events. my question is what would be a good lens (canon only) for me to get for my indoor dining events and some portrait stuff. i shoot with the canon 7d.

Well, Ryan. We really need more info than this. How much focal length do you need? What's your budget?

For rodeo, I'd say one of the 70-200mm versions would be best. They also work quite well for portraits. I'm not sure what you mean by "indoor dining events", but one of the 17-55 or so f/2.8 varieties from Canon, Tamron or Sigma would be good, I suspect.

Give us more to go on and maybe we can narrow it down a bit.

Gear: EOS 5DMKII; EOS 400D (infrared converted); Canon 24-105mm f/4 L; Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX; Canon 70-200mm f/4 L; Canon 135mm f/2.0 L; Pentax SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4 with EOS adaptor, Rokinon 14mm f/2.8; only enough knowledge to be a clear and present danger to society.
