My only lens is an EF-S 15-85, that I'm using on my Canon D40. I'm looking to at something longer and something wider. I mainly shoot landscapes, cityscapes, and travel pictures. Hardly any portrait shoots and almost always outdoors. I almost never use a flash, either.

Back in the old film days, one of my favorite lenses for my AE-1 was a 20mm 2.8. I loved it and took some of my favorite pictures with it. I have mainly been thinking of either EF-S 10-22 or the EF-8-15. I'm not that interested in the classic round, fish-eye effect, but certainly want something wider the widest on my 15-85. Also not sure if the 10-22 will be wide enough, and whether getting just 5 extra mm from my current lens makes sense. I know there is a significant different in price between the 10-22 and the 8-15, but let's put that aside for now.

As for a telephoto, I have narrowed it down to the Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS, and the EF-70-22 f4L IS. I would like the extra 100 mm on the 70-300, and also like that the lens is physically shorter than the 70-22. It's also heavier, however, and doesn't have the f4 for its entire length. Wondering how important that f stop will be in lower lighting conditions.

Anyway, I appreciate any thoughts you might have. Thanks

There's a Sigma 8-16 that's not a fisheye, and is really wide.

Both the telephoto lenses you mention are excellent. It's up to you whether the extra length or the extra stop are more important.

I have both the 8-15mm and the 10-22mm. If I could only pick one it would be the 10-22mm. I just bought a 5D3 and I really miss using 10-22. It is very wide , the colors are richer and no (just a little) distortion. The 8-15 is a great lens but the 10-22 is much more practial. The 10-22 is very good for landscapes and indoor (with tripod)photography. I also use it for HDR. Go with the 10-22 and you won't be sorry.
Hope this helped.

I suspect the 10-22 will be more practical, as Darts states, for the wider angles....10mm is REALLY wide, as it is.

As for the longer telephoto...a little more info on what you intend to shoot at those focal lengths would help. Both lenses are fantastic lenses, and it really comes down to your needs of focal length vs light gathering capabilities and/or DoF requirements.

I have the 70-200 f/4 IS and the 10-22. From what I've read, the 70-200 is sharper than the 70-300 but obviously doesn't have the extra reach. If you mainly shoot outside, the 70-300 wouldn't be a bad choice. As for the 10-22, it's great for architecture, interiors, and landscapes with strong foregrounds.

I have both the 15-85 and the 10-22. Yes, 10mm is a fair bit wider than 15, and is great...when/if i need it. That said, i use the 15-85 almost always, and rarely pull out the 10-22. Nothing negative about the 10-22, it's just that the 15-85 is such a great "all around" lens, and wide enough for most of what i shoot(including landscapes).

When I only had a crop body my favourite lens was my 10-22. When I brought a 15-85 I thought it would probably make the 10-22 redundant. Not so, I still used the 10-22 all the time and found the 15-85 actually complimented it. As a pair they were great, almost the perfect couple really and by far my two most used lenses. If I had to travel with only 2 they would have been the 2 I chose. I think you will be surpised at just how much wider 10mm is over 15mm.
