What Cannon/direct printer for G3?

My S600 has just died on me (great timing 2 weeks after the arrival of my G3). Looking at the latest Canon range the i950 appears to get good reviews. However, I am tempted to get a printer that accepts CF cards such as the S830D. On the face of it, this appears a good facility, but is it one that is actually useful in reality? I presume that printing directly from the inserted card means that you can't do even the minimum processing, i.e. cropping ?

Can anyone advise the pros and cons of getting a direct printer? Any recommendations out there ?

Dave

Hi Dave,

I bought the i850 a week ago.
I have not had much chance to do more than a few prints, but am very happy with the results so far.

For the few prints I have done, in the i850, I was able to print with no adjustment of brightness or color. Considering I was printing on Epson Photo Paper this came as a pleasant surprise. I have lots of Epson paper left over from my previous printer.

I have no doubt I will be needing to do some adjustments of brightness and color in future and I will also need to use the computer software to increase sharpness, since I usually have this turned to the lowest level in the camera for the JPEG file type.

I can't really comment on the direct print printers but because I know I will want to adjust most prints on a large monitor I saw no value in paying extra for the direct print option. I am accustom to doing lots of small cropped test prints before I print the full sized final photo.

I believe you will be able to do some basic cropping using the small LCD on the direct print printers.

Hi,

I bought the new Canon i740D photo printer last week. It's inexpensive but gives excellent results. Since it's geared to the home user, the output isn't as fast as other printers, but I'm very satisfied with it.

I'm using a Canon G3 camera and Canon paper. No, I'm not a shareholder, but I believe that companys make their products to give the best results if they're all used together as a single system: camera -> printer -> cartridge -> paper.

My finished prints often elicit "wow!" from others, including a picture of flowers in a hanging pot taken on a cloudy day to which I did no post-processing.

Bruce/Jim

Thanks for the replies.

Bruce - I've looked at the i850 and it is a lot cheaper here in the UK than the 950 - over £100! (why is everything so much more expensive here?). I may go for it.

Jim - Do you use the direct functions much? What can you do from the printer directly? What's the software like? I'll have a look at the model you suggest as I'm not familiar with its features.

Thanks again

Dave

Do you mean the i470D?
